Editorial & Publishing Assistant

Work directly with our publisher and editors through the full life of a manuscript — from submission triage and author correspondence to formatting, proofing and launch. About the Role Every paper and book BRJ publishes passes through dozens of careful hands-on steps: checking new submissions, corresponding with authors and reviewers, tracking corrections, preparing manuscripts for production, proofing formatted PDFs and coordinating issue launches. The Editorial & Publishing Assistant is the person who keeps each of those steps moving on time. What You Will Do Triage incoming submissions: completeness checks, formatting sanity, plagiarism/AI screening workflow. Draft and send author and reviewer correspondence, and keep every thread answered and on schedule. Track manuscripts through review, revision, acceptance, invoicing and production milestones. Assist with copy-editing, reference checking and proofing of formatted articles and books. Coordinate issue assembly and launch logistics with the production and web teams. What We Are Looking For 1–3 years in publishing, editorial, communications, research administration or similar (strong internships count). Meticulous attention to detail — you notice the missing DOI and the inconsistent reference style. Excellent written English and a professional, warm correspondence voice. Comfortable juggling many small deadlines across tools (email, spreadsheets, our Atlas publishing system). Able to work on-site at our Somerville, MA office. Nice to Have Familiarity with academic publishing conventions (peer review, ORCID, DOIs, CC licensing). Copy-editing experience or coursework; a second language.
