Ophthalmic Technician - Specialty 1 - Electrophysiologist

The University of Miami, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, has an exciting full time opportunity for an Ophthalmic Technician - Specialty 1 - Electrophysiologist, in Miami, Florida. The Ophthalmic Technician - Specialty 1 (H) may perform ophthalmic clinical, diagnostic, or specialty-specific procedures that support the evaluation, treatment, and management of eye conditions. This role applies foundational specialty knowledge and technical skills to perform ophthalmic testing, assist with procedures, and support patient care workflows in diagnostic or procedural settings. Specific specialty focus areas are defined at the department level.

Core Job Functions

• Performs ophthalmic testing, measurements, or specialty-specific procedures in accordance with training, protocols, and scope of practice.
• Prepares patients for diagnostic studies, treatments, or procedures, explaining processes and addressing patient questions.
• Obtains and documents patient histories, clinical findings, test results, and procedural data in the electronic medical record.
• Operates ophthalmic instruments, imaging systems, or specialty equipment relevant to assigned clinical services.
• Assists physicians and care teams with examinations or procedures, including pre- and post-procedure patient support.
• Identifies and communicates abnormal findings or technical issues following established escalation protocols.
• Ensures exam rooms, procedure areas, and equipment are prepared, maintained, and compliant with safety and infection control standards.
• Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Core Qualifications

• Education: High School Diploma or equivalent/relevant experience, certification or license
• Experience: Minimum 2 years of relevant experience required

Departmental Specific Functions Electrophysiology Services

• Conduct ERG, PERG, VEP, EOG, PhNR, S-Cone ERG, Multifocal ERG, Multifocal VEP, FST, Retinal imaging and A-Scan procedures.
• Ensure compliance with ISCEV standards and study-specific protocols.
• Monitor signal quality and obtain reliable diagnostic recordings.

Functional Vision & Mobility Assessment

• Perform comprehensive visual acuity, color vision, contrast sensitivity, and low vision assessments.
• Administer ETDRS, EVA, LLVA, BCVA, MNREAD, BRVT, and IReST testing.
• Conduct color vision testing using Ishihara, Farnsworth D-15, D-100 Hue, and Lanthony D-15 methodologies.
• Support clinical trials and specialty clinics requiring advanced visual function measurements.
• Conduct Goldmann, Humphrey, Octopus, and Medmont visual field testing.
• Perform customized visual field assessments for disease-specific and research protocols.
• Ensure accurate testing conditions and reproducible visual field measurements.
• Assist physicians and researchers in evaluating disease progression and treatment outcomes.
• Perform mobility and virtual reality-based vision assessments.
• Conduct shape recognition, depth perception, stereopsis, and motion perception testing.
• Evaluate real-world visual performance for clinical and research applications.
• Collect vital signs and intraocular pressure measurements when required.

Research & Clinical Trial Support

• Support investigator-initiated studies, sponsored research, and clinical trials.
• Perform protocol-specific testing and data collection activities.
• Maintain accurate source documentation and study records.
• Collaborate with physicians, coordinators, and research teams to ensure successful study execution.
• Contribute to the development and implementation of specialized testing protocols and emerging technologies
