Certified Police Officer

Position Overview Under the general supervision of a Sergeant and in cooperation with the community, the Police Officer performs a variety of policing and law enforcement activities. Tasks are primarily service oriented and include patrol, investigative, and enforcement functions to provide for public safety and to perform essential functions as required. Duties may involve personal danger, exposure to adverse weather conditions, apprehending criminals, directing traffic, and transporting prisoners. Incumbents act without close supervision and exercise independent judgment. Work is reviewed through observation, conferences, and written reporting. Officers may be authorized to assume Sergeant duties in their absence. Responsibilities Patrol and maintain presence in assigned areas Conduct investigative and enforcement operations Respond to emergencies and visit scenes of incidents Apprehend criminals and detain offenders Direct traffic and ensure roadway safety Transport prisoners and secure detainees Adhere to Florida Statutes, departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines Maintain accurate records and documentation Operate effectively in adverse conditions Exercise independent judgment and act without close supervision Requirements Must be a current State of Florida Certified Police Officer United States citizen Minimum 21 years of age High School Graduate or G.E.D. equivalency Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record Pass Physical Agility Test (PAT) Pass Swim Test Pass Oral Board Examination Pass Polygraph Examination Pass Psychological Screening (Law) Pass extensive background investigation Pass Chief and/or Command Staff review Pass extensive medical evaluation Pass drug detection urinalysis test Meet current State training requirements as necessary Stable work history Possess ability to exercise discretion Be of good moral character, no felony convictions or incidents of violence Not have been convicted of felony or misdemeanor involving perjury or false statement Military discharge must be Honorable Certified Police Officers previously employed by the City of Hollywood who successfully passed the hiring process may have certain hiring requirements waived Examinations & Eligibility Candidates must pass a Physical Agility Test (PAT) and Swim Test. The examination process includes an oral board examination. To be placed on the eligibility list, candidates must achieve a cumulative score of 15 or more. The PAT score is valid for six months; the Swim score is valid for life. Veteran's Preference Veterans and their family members are given preference. Eligible candidates must submit a DD‑214 and meet Florida Statute criteria. Automatic Background Disqualifiers Five or more traffic moving violations in the last five years or a poor overall driving history Two or more driver’s license suspensions in the last five years Any DUI arrest and/or conviction in the last five years Any tattoos on the neck or face Any arrest and/or conviction involving domestic violence issues Failure to disclose any traffic tickets, convictions, past employer information, or any other pertinent information in the background Recent use of any illegal controlled substance Failure to pass background investigation or psychological screening within the past year Discharge from the military other than Honorable Employment of Relatives The City of Hollywood's ordinance restricts hiring of relatives. Relatives may be hired only if they have competed in an appropriate examination, are among the top three ranked candidates, and hiring is deemed in the best interests of the City.
