The Department
The Torrance Police Department mission is to preserve public safety and quality of life within the City of Torrance, to respond effectively to the changing needs of the community, and to promote mutual respect between the Police Department and the people we serve.

The Division There is currently one vacancy for Police Services Supervisors in the Jail Unit . The Jail Unit is responsible for functions associated with the housing and caring of prisoners.


The Position
Police Services Supervisors are primarily responsible for organizing, planning, and overseeing the day-to-day operations of the assigned Unit. Police Services Supervisors are responsible for providing clear direction, guidance, and support to ensure staff effectively perform their duties while adhering to departmental policies, legal standards, and ethical guidelines.

HOURS: Candidates must be able and willing to work rotating shifts and holidays.

QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES
Experience & Education Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way of obtaining the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities is:

Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate; and three years of increasingly responsible experience in a law enforcement environment or similar agency that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary in the specific area of assignment.


One year of supervisory or lead work experience is preferred. An Associate Degree or sixty (60) or more college units from an accredited college or university with major coursework in criminal justice, public or business administration, political science, or closely related field, is desirable.

License and/or Certificates

Must possess and maintain a California Class C Driver's License.
Complete a basic supervisory course within one year of appointment.

Incumbents assigned to Jail must possess :
-Corrections Officer Core Course (as described in Section 1020).
-STC or POST Supervisory Core Course (as described in Section 181, Title 15, CCR) within one (1) year of appointment.

In addition to the minimum requirements, an ideal candidate will possess:
  • A high degree of understanding law enforcement policies and procedures;
  • Ability to successfully navigate local government;
  • Exceptional oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Strong skills in team-building, coaching, and mentoring staff;
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with management, coworkers, and the public; and
  • Ability to set an example for others in terms of professional conduct, and fostering an atmosphere of trust and respect within the agency.

Oral Interview: 100% (Tentatively scheduled March 17, 2026.)

Assignment may be rotated to other Units within the Police Department, as needed. These Units include Community Affairs, Jail, Police Records, Property Room, or Traffic.
Candidates must pass each component of the exam process, as well as a thorough background investigation to be considered for hire. The background investigation will include job and personal references, arrest records, credit history, use of controlled substances, medical and psychological evaluations, drug screening and a polygraph.
