Lincoln Parish Schools Job Description 2026-2027
Title: School Bus Mechanic
Qualifications: Minimum 3 years documented experience repairing and servicing school buses or medium duty trucks; demonstrated success in performing a wide variety of tasks requiring a proficient understanding of school bus repair; ability to overhaul engines on both gasoline and diesel powered trucks and school buses; valid CDL license with School Bus endorsement; and active Louisiana Licensed Motor Vehicle Inspector certification (If LMVI certification is not held at time of hire, certification must be obtained in first 6 month of employment).
Reports To: Transportation Supervisor
Job Goal: Plan, schedule, repair and preventative maintenance on Lincoln Parish School Board transportation fleet as needed; ensure the availability of vehicles in safe operating condition; and provide written documentation of repairs to meet Lincoln Parish School Board, state and federal requirements.
Terms Of Employment: 12-Month, 40 hours per week
Evaluation: Performance Evaluation annually
Compensation: Shop Foreman Salary Schedule (Table 15)
Performance Responsibilities
1. Perform routine diagnostic assessments in house to determine repair needs in accordance with factory and industry standards.
2. Perform bus repair and maintenance work using all available equipment and resources in accordance with factory and industry standards, including but not limited to: a. Repair, replace, and/or maintain bus external equipment and engine parts (e.g, lights., switches, seats, hoses, belts, reservoirs for fluids, radiators, pulleys, water pumps, blower motors, radios and speakers, stop signs, crossing arms, mirrors, fuses, relays, AC filters); b. Force regeneration for diesel engines as needed; and c. Adjust bus speed governors as needed.
3. Set and maintain a regular schedule of routine preventative inspections on all buses throughout the year.
4. Transport buses to and from repair, service, and dealer shops to facilitate warranty, specialty, and heavy repairs which cannot be performed onsite as needed.
5. Report regularly and punctually within the time framework established by the Transportation Department.
6. Notify the Transportation Office immediately of impending absence or tardiness.
7. Perform biannual bus safety inspections in keeping with applicable local, state, and federal guidelines, as well as vehicle state safety inspections for district vehicles.
8. Open and close shop as directed by the shop manager and transportation dept.
9. Order parts and schedule service as required to maintain effective bus operation.
10. Maintain shop building and grounds to ensure safety and cleanliness of the facility.
11. Effectively communicate with drivers to ascertain repair and maintenance needs.
12. Fuel buses and shop vehicles as needed.
13. Keep accurate service, maintenance, and repair records on all buses and shop vehicles.
14. Install, maintain, and repair video surveillance systems in buses as needed. Effective 7/1/2026
15. Attend and actively participate in all conferences, meetings, and/or in-service programs as directed to by transportation dept. administration and/or shop manager.
16. Submit to drug and alcohol testing as required by board policy and federal law.
17. Respond to breakdowns and/or accidents in a timely fashion.
18. Practice safe work habits and use personal protective equipment as required.
19. Assist with new driver training initiatives.

7. Keep the direct supervisor informed of the progress being made in the area(s) of responsibility.
8. Report to the Lincoln Parish School Board as needed or directed.
9. Keep abreast professionally by attending local, regional, state, or national meetings and/or staff development that address area(s) of responsibility as directed by the supervisor.
10. Complete and submit all forms, reports, documentation, and training by required dates and in accordance with district policies and procedures.
11. Remain open to suggestions and innovative ideas; receive and apply feedback.
12. Demonstrate competence in areas of responsibility.
13. Exert every effort to constructively involve stakeholders in all professional settings.
14. Communicate appropriately and work effectively with all populations.
15. Exhibit desirable qualities such as commitment to job responsibilities, enthusiasm, cooperation, sense of humor, creativity, tact, positive attitude/work ethic, dependability, punctuality, self-discipline/control, poise, voice control, effective nonverbal communication, a professional appearance, initiative, and a genuine concern and interest for others.
16. Follow the specific requirements established by the School Board (LEA), State Department of Education (SDE), the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (SBESE), and/or Federal regulations and guidelines established by each.
17. Perform any duty, not specifically assigned, as deemed necessary by the assigning authority in order to maintain continuity where needed.
While the operation of the Lincoln Parish School Board and its schools is governed by the provisions of this and all other policies, as well as the procedures of the individual schools, no policy manual can list each and every instance of misconduct that is precluded. Accordingly, employees are cautioned that the appropriateness of certain action or behavior must necessarily be dictated by the nature of the position held by the employee and commonsense. By virtue of one's education and experience, an employee knows and understands that certain actions or conduct are unacceptable even in the absence of formal policy. For instance, without the need of a specific prohibition or warning, a classroom teacher should be aware of the impropriety of certain practices such as leaving students unattended, using profanity or sexually suggestive language or bringing a firearm onto campus. Such conduct constitutes both incompetence and willful neglect of duty and will result in the imposition of discipline up to and including termination.
