Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced, certified Medical Laboratory Technologist to join our small hospital laboratory in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Our laboratory supports inpatient care, surgical services, pre-admission testing, and emergency clinical needs. The ideal candidate will have recent hospital laboratory experience and the ability to work independently across multiple laboratory disciplines following completion of facility-specific training and competency assessments. Strong Blood Bank experience, sound clinical judgment, and the ability to respond confidently to urgent testing needs are essential for success in this role. This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled technologist who is comfortable working in a small hospital laboratory environment and can become productive quickly.

Schedule and On-Call Responsibilities

Full-time, day-shift position with a start time of either 5:00 AM or 8:30 AM. Participation in the laboratory on-call rotation is required. Weekend responsibilities are limited to on-call coverage for emergent laboratory needs. On-call duties may include urgent Blood Bank and transfusion support, emergency procedures, and other critical testing requested by physicians or surgeons. The technologist must be comfortable responding independently to assigned on-call needs after completing facility-specific training and competency assessments.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform moderate- and high-complexity laboratory testing across multiple disciplines.
• Provide Blood Bank and transfusion services, including urgent support as needed.
• Perform general chemistry, immunoassay, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, microscopy, and blood gas testing.
• Perform phlebotomy and patient blood draws as part of routine laboratory responsibilities.
• Conduct point-of-care (POC) testing and support emergency clinical testing needs.
• Perform quality control, routine instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, and other quality assurance activities.
• Follow established laboratory procedures, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
• Support inpatient, surgical, pre-admission testing, and emergency department services.
• Respond appropriately to urgent testing requests and communicate critical results according to facility protocols.
• Complete required facility-specific training and competency assessments before performing assigned testing independently.

Required Qualifications

• Current Medical Laboratory Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist certification through ASCP or AMT.
• Recent hospital laboratory experience comparable to the testing environment described.
• Demonstrated experience with Blood Bank and transfusion services.
• Working knowledge of chemistry, immunoassay, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis and microscopy, and blood gas testing.
• Experience with quality control, instrument maintenance, and troubleshooting.
• Ability to perform both moderate- and high-complexity testing.
• Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment in a hospital laboratory setting.
• Willingness to participate in on-call coverage and respond to emergent laboratory needs.
• Willingness to perform phlebotomy and patient blood draws as part of the position.

Preferred Qualifications

• Strong, recent Blood Bank experience.
• Prior phlebotomy experience.
• Experience working in a small hospital laboratory with broad, multidisciplinary responsibilities.
• Ability to adapt quickly to facility-specific procedures, instrumentation, and workflows.
• Phlebotomy training will be provided; however, candidates must be willing and able to perform patient blood draws.
