Firefighter – San Francisco Fire Department (H002) Job Code and Title: H002-Firefighter Full-time Certification Rule: Rule of the List Fill Type: Permanent Civil Service Under general supervision, a Firefighter engages in firefighting and related activities for the saving of life and property. They administer first responder treatment, including first aid, and respond to a variety of emergency situations involving public safety and medical care. A Firefighter may also be assigned duties in connection with fire prevention activities, inspection of businesses, schools, and homes, maintaining station quarters, and other duties as assigned. Firefighters work 24‑hour shifts, including weekends and holidays, and live and work in close quarters with at least three other individuals at a fire station. Effective teamwork and cooperation are required. Application Opening: Tuesday, 11/21/2023 Eligibility Requirements (verified during Background Investigation): Age: Applicants must be at least 19 years old at the time of application and at least 20 years old at the time of appointment. Education: Applicants must have a high school diploma or an equivalent certificate (e.g., GED). Driving Record: Applicants must possess a valid Class A, B, or C California Driver License by appointment. Any offense resulting in a conviction for drunken driving, reckless driving, or hit‑and‑run, license suspension or revocation, or three moving violations in 12 months, five moving violations in 24 months, or probation from a driving‑related offense will disqualify a candidate. Criminal Record: Applicants must not have been convicted of a felony or be on probation for a misdemeanor within the past year. Misdemeanor convictions within the past year will be evaluated individually. Verification of Education and Experience: Applicants may be required to provide verification of qualifying education and experience at any point during the process. Required Certifications and Tests: Card for Cal‑JAC CPAT dated within one year. Score of 70% or higher on the FCTC Written Test dated within one year of posting. Current NREMT, CA EMT‑1 or CA EMT‑P. Testing Overview: The FCTC Written Test consists of 100 multiple‑choice questions in four sections: (1) Verbal and visual recall, (2) Mechanical reasoning, (3) Mathematical problem solving, (4) Technical information recall. The test is administered quarterly and is not available online. Eligibility List Rules: Candidates may remain on the eligible list for up to 24 months. Placement on the list does not guarantee employment. An applicant may waive an offer no more than twice.
