There is no hiding out in comfort zones. Your Role as a Human Resources Manager At our immigration law firm, our mission is driven by incredible people. We are seeking an empathetic, strategic, and collaborative Human Resources Manager to nurture and champion our vibrant global team of 80–100 workers. Our community consists of dedicated international independent contractors across Latin America, alongside a growing domestic team of U.S. employees based in California, Illinois, and Texas . In this role, you will serve as the advocate for our team's growth, well-being, and day-to-day work experience. You will build seamless onboarding journeys, serve as a trusted partner for workplace resolution, and cultivate a supportive, inclusive culture across borders. Additionally, you will guide multi-state compliance, ensuring our U.S. team members feel supported, clear on expectations, and protected under local guidelines. Payroll administration is handled separately by our finance team, allowing you to focus on people, culture, and employee advocacy. Key Responsibilities 1. Welcoming Onboarding & Offboarding Journeys First Impressions Matter: Design warm, structured onboarding experiences that help new Latin American contractors and multi-state employees feel immediately welcomed and prepared. Thoughtful Offboarding: Conduct compassionate exit interviews, gather constructive feedback, and oversee smooth transitions and access revocations. Clear Documentation: Maintain fair, transparent contractor agreements and NDAs that foster clarity and trust for all parties. 2. Multi-State U.S. Employee Support & Compliance State Labor Guidance: Oversee compliance across key operating states (CA, IL, TX), maintaining an up-to-date Employee Handbook with state-specific addendums. Leave & Benefits Administration: Guide employees through state-specific leave rights, such as California’s CFRA/PFL, Illinois’ Paid Leave for All Workers Act (PLAWA) and Bereavement Leave, and Texas regulations. Fair Workplace Practices: Manage non-exempt timekeeping and break policies to align with California and Illinois rules, and administer remote expense reimbursements (e.g., CA § 2802 and IL Expense Reimbursement Act). Mandatory Training: Coordinate state-required programs, including anti-harassment training (CA and IL requirements) and workplace safety policies. Trusted HR Partner: Serve as an approachable point of contact for team members across LATAM and the U.S., offering an open door for workplace concerns or personal support. Fair Conflict Resolution: Address workplace disagreements and sensitive issues with objectivity, care, and emotional intelligence. Manager Coaching: Partner with team leaders to deliver constructive feedback, run supportive reviews, and set up growth plans for remote, cross-cultural teams. 4. Inclusive Culture & Strategic People Operations Cross-Border Community: Build engagement initiatives, virtual rituals, and shared experiences that bring our distributed team together across time zones. Pathways for Growth: Design clear career progression paths, continuous learning opportunities, and recognition programs for legal support staff. Strategic Insights: Collaborate with leadership to gather team sentiment, refine retention strategies, and continuously improve our work environment. Qualifications & Character Experience: 4–6+ years in HR / People Operations with a focus on people-first practices. Multi-State HR Knowledge: Practical experience managing employees across multiple states, specifically familiarity with California and/or Illinois employment guidelines. LATAM Workforce Experience: Direct experience supporting and building relationships with remote independent contractors in Latin America . Human-Centered Mindset: Strong emotional intelligence, active listening skills, and a genuine commitment to empathetic problem-solving. Tools: Proficiency with remote collaboration tools (Slack, Google Suite). Language: Full professional fluency in both Spanish and English (written and spoken) is strongly preferred.
