Substitute Therapeutic Intervention Coach - SPED

Position Summary

The Therapeutic Intervention Coach supports K-12 students with emotional, behavioral, and intellectual disabilities in SPED settings. This role provides behavioral and academic intervention, including verbal and physical de-escalation, data tracking, and staff support. The coach serves as a lead responder during physical intervention situations and promotes safe, positive learning environments.

Key Responsibilities

• Support teachers and staff with student behavior and academic interventions.
• Provide individual and small group coaching to help students regulate and reintegrate into classrooms.
• Support students with special needs by following provisions specified in their IEPs/504 Plans.
• Maintain and staff sensory or de-escalation rooms where physical interventions may occur.
• Collect, document, chart, and summarize behavioral and academic data.
• Must collaborate with Special Education staff, Student Management Specialists, and mental health professionals on behavior and safety plans.
• Participate in and apply training in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) and other de-escalation methods.
• Uphold district equity policies and participate in related professional development.
• Perform other duties as assigned by administration.

Qualifications

• Two years of college coursework to meet ESSA requirements or passing score on a Para Professional exam required.
• Preferred three years’ related experience in special education or mental health settings (education, training, or experience may substitute).
• Strong teamwork, communication, and data documentation skills.
• Ability to remain calm and professional during crises.
• Must complete NCI certification upon hire.
• Bachelor’s degree and therapeutic intervention experience preferred.
• Requires ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform frequent physical movement (bending, restraining, kneeling).
