Job Description

The Medical Assistant provides direct patient care support to physicians and nurse practitioners by performing vital sign documentation, preparing patients and examination rooms for visits and procedures, and maintaining a clean, organized, and safe clinical environment. This role plays a key part in ensuring efficient patient flow, accurate medical record documentation, and clear communication between patients and clinical providers in a community health center setting.

Responsibilities

• Greet patients warmly and help them feel comfortable upon arrival to the clinic.

• Measure and document vital signs accurately, including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and other required measurements.

• Prepare patients for examinations and procedures by reviewing basic information, confirming concerns, and ensuring readiness for the visit.

• Set up and maintain examination rooms for exams and procedures, ensuring they are clean, organized, and properly stocked.

• Assist physicians and nurse practitioners during examinations and procedures, including documenting medical history, case notes, and other relevant patient information.

• Collect patient data in person and by phone, carefully documenting symptoms, concerns, and questions in the electronic medical record.

• Relay instructions from the physician or nurse practitioner to the patient or authorized representative in a clear and respectful manner.

• Accurately document all medical information, care provided, and patient communications in the electronic medical record system.

• Take complete and accurate messages, route messages to the appropriate area or provider, and ensure timely follow-up and resolution.

• Enter orders and referrals as directed, set up cases in the electronic medical record system, and perform basic registration and demographic updates.

• Track and route test results to physicians and nurse practitioners for review and follow-up.

• Communicate test results to patients when authorized by the physician or nurse practitioner, answering basic questions and reinforcing instructions.

• Facilitate patient care activities, including scheduling ancillary tests and appointments as directed by clinical staff.

• Reinforce patient education provided by the clinical team and perform basic triage activities as appropriate and directed by site operations.

• Maintain adequate inventory of medical, office, and pharmaceutical supplies, and notify appropriate staff when replenishment is needed.

• Use electronic health record systems proficiently to support daily documentation, order processing, and communication related to patient care.

• Process clinical and administrative orders accurately and in a timely manner to support smooth clinic operations.

• Support the mission of providing comprehensive primary, preventive, and behavioral health services to all patients, including underserved and vulnerable populations.

Essential Skills

• At least 6 months of experience working as a Medical Assistant.

• Completion of a Medical Assistant school program with a certificate, or National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Medical Assistant certification.

• Demonstrated proficiency in taking and documenting vital signs accurately.

• Experience providing direct patient care support in a clinical or ambulatory care setting.

• Ability to prepare patients and examination rooms for exams and procedures.

• Strong skills in documenting medical history, case notes, and patient concerns in electronic medical records (EMR).

• Proficiency with electronic medical record systems, including Epic or similar platforms.

• Ability to collect patient information in person and by phone and record it clearly and accurately.

• Strong attention to detail when taking, routing, and documenting messages and orders.

• Ability to track, route, and communicate test results in accordance with clinical guidance.

• Basic triage skills as directed by physicians or nurse practitioners and site operations.

• Ability to maintain a clean, organized, and safe clinical environment.

• Basic computer skills and comfort working with digital systems and documentation.

• Strong communication skills to relay instructions and reinforce patient education.

• Ability to manage medical, office, and pharmaceutical supplies and maintain adequate inventory.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• National certification as a Medical Assistant is highly preferred.

• Experience working with Epic or other major electronic medical record systems.

• Prior experience in urgent care or community health center environments is beneficial.

• Familiarity with scheduling ancillary tests and coordinating follow-up care.

• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume clinical setting.

• Strong interpersonal skills and a patient-centered approach to care.

• Commitment to serving diverse communities, including underserved and vulnerable populations.

• Organizational skills to handle multiple tasks such as documentation, messaging, and order processing.

• Comfort working collaboratively with physicians, nurse practitioners, and other clinical and administrative staff.

Work Environment

This position is based in a network of community health centers located across multiple areas, including Beacon, Haverstraw, Nyack, Spring Valley, Peekskill, Poughkeepsie, White Plains, and New Rochelle. The environment is a Federally Qualified, non-profit health center setting that provides comprehensive primary, preventive, and behavioral health services regardless of insurance status or ability to pay, with a strong focus on underserved and vulnerable communities. Medical Assistants work in clinical spaces equipped with examination rooms, standard medical equipment, and electronic medical record systems such as Epic. The role involves continuous interaction with patients, physicians, nurse practitioners, and other care team members throughout the day, with a focus on efficient patient flow and high-quality care. The work is typically performed in standard clinical attire appropriate for a medical environment. Some locations may experience a slower hiring process due to local leadership availability, but all sites share a mission-driven, team-oriented culture dedicated to respectful, accessible health care.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Peekskill, NY.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.50 - $25.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
