Phlebotomist

The Phlebotomist II plays a key role in delivering high-quality laboratory services by performing blood draws and specimen collection, ensuring accurate labeling and processing, and supporting smooth workflow in a fast-paced clinical environment. This position involves troubleshooting, participating in training activities, and making recommendations to improve work processes while providing courteous and clear communication to patients and clinical staff.

Responsibilities:

• Perform venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles with a high degree of accuracy and patient care.
• Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens in accordance with established procedures and protocols.
• Explain venipuncture and specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all test orders are correctly associated with the appropriate samples.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and laboratory protocols.
• Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts or orders to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.
• Package specimens securely and appropriately for transport, following protocols to maintain specimen integrity.
• Store specimen samples at required temperatures and place them in the correct collection containers or tubes, accurately labeling each sample.
• Follow detailed procedures and protocols for specimen handling and transport to preserve the quality and reliability of test results.
• Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks to support a clean, safe, and well-maintained laboratory environment.
• Update patient information accurately in laboratory systems and records as needed.
• Fully understand and interpret physicians' orders to ensure correct specimen collection and processing.
• Answer telephone calls professionally and read laboratory results when appropriate to address inquiries.
• Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all relevant safety and regulatory standards.
• Attend annual department trainings and participate in ongoing education to maintain current knowledge of procedures and regulations.
• Assist with troubleshooting workflow or specimen-related issues and make recommendations to improve efficiency and quality.
• Contribute to a positive customer service experience for patients and clinical staff through professional, respectful interactions.

Essential Skills:

• Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
• Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
• 24 years of overall experience in a clinical, laboratory, or related healthcare environment.
• Proficiency in performing venipuncture and blood draws using both straight needles and butterfly needles.
• Strong skills in specimen collection, labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and storage according to protocol.
• Ability to accurately match laboratory requisitions to specimen tubes and verify test orders.
• Competence in updating patient information and recording maintenance data in laboratory systems.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for documentation, communication, and basic data entry.
• Thorough understanding of OSHA and DEP regulations and commitment to following safety protocols.
• Clear and courteous communication skills for explaining procedures to patients and responding to inquiries.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail and accuracy.
• High School Diploma or GED.

• Demonstrated customer service skills when interacting with patients and clinical staff.
• Experience answering telephone calls and reading laboratory results to address questions appropriately.
• Ability to participate in and benefit from training activities and annual department education sessions.
• Skill in troubleshooting workflow or specimen handling issues and suggesting improvements.
• Comfort working independently as a non-float phlebotomist while collaborating with the broader laboratory and clinical team.

Work Environment:

This position is based in Jamesburg, NJ and operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting focused on accurate specimen collection and processing. The schedule includes Monday 1:00 p.m.7:00 p.m., Tuesday 4:00 p.m.7:00 p.m., Wednesday 1:00 p.m.7:00 p.m., Thursday 4:00 p.m.7:00 p.m., Friday 9:00 a.m.12:00 p.m., and Saturday 8:30 a.m.3:00 p.m. You will work with standard phlebotomy and laboratory equipment, including straight and butterfly needles, centrifuges, and specimen storage systems, while using computer systems and Microsoft Office Suite for documentation and communication. The environment emphasizes adherence to safety and regulatory standards, including OSHA and DEP guidelines, and supports ongoing training and professional development. Professional attire appropriate for clinical and laboratory work is expected, with attention to safety and cleanliness in all work areas.

This is a Contract position based out of Jamesburg, NJ.

Pay and Benefits:

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $25.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
