Veterinary Extern - General Practice
Abqpetcarehospital
Overview An externship experience at an NVA hospital will give students the unique opportunity to understand day‑to‑day operations of the practice and to gain valuable hands‑on clinical experience. Every NVA hospital shares an environment that is supportive, committed to excellent medicine, and provides exceptional service to animals and their owners. Externship Scope We are a busy rural general‑practice hospital with a diverse client base. We emphasize practical quality medicine and strive to deliver the best service within each client’s budget. While we do not offer after‑hour emergency care, we see many urgent‑care appointments during the day. Our surgical case load includes many procedures not typically performed in practice, such as perineal urethrostomy, hemilaminectomy, TECAs, ACL reconstructions, patella luxations, and fracture repairs. We also provide ultrasound, endoscopy, and dental radiographs. Students work closely with the supervising veterinarian to gather patient histories, perform physical exams, create treatment plans, conduct diagnostics, provide dentistry services, and observe or assist surgical and medical procedures. Additionally, students practice communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients. Duration and Scheduling Externship experiences at Ridge Animal Hospital typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate in NVA externships. Eligibility and Stipend Veterinary students who are in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. For a list of stipend amounts and details on the stipend program, please refer to the institution’s stipend program information. Benefits While the externship does not offer a full benefits program, the hospital provides a comprehensive benefits program for eligible employees, including medical, dental, vision, a 401(k) with employer match, and paid time off (including sick time). Position‑specific details may be discussed during the process. For positions based in Colorado, compliant benefits include paid sick and safe leave and public health emergency leave as required by the Healthy Families and Workplaces Act. Equal Opportunity Employer National Veterinary Associates is an Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, protected veteran or disabled status, or genetic information. In accordance with the San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance, Los Angeles Fair Chance Initiative for Hiring Ordinance, and applicable state and local regulations, we consider all qualified applicants, including those with arrest or conviction records. #J-18808-Ljbffr
