Electronic Characterization Engineer

Work Location: Palo Alto, CA

Role Summary

The Electronics Test and Validation team is responsible for module-level validation testing of electronic control units (ECUs). The team ensures that all client electronics are designed and manufactured correctly by developing scalable tools, processes, hardware, and software solutions for characterization, validation, and manufacturing. In this role, you will be an individual contributor responsible for design verification and characterization of vehicle electronics, with a strong focus on Zonal ECUs. You will work cross-functionally to ensure electronics meet all module-level requirements.

Responsibilities

• Develop detailed design verification and characterization test plans for all phases of ECU programs, collaborating with reliability, design, and firmware teams.
• Lead execution of characterization test plans in alignment with project milestones.
• Own test coverage reports, analysis, and documentation.
• Perform bench-level characterization at both IC and PCBA levels.
• Provide early design feedback to engineers regarding design decisions and testability.
• Develop and present Design for Testability (DFT) reports for ECU designs.
• Own characterization schedules and communicate status to leadership and cross-functional teams.
• Write basic automation scripts and instrumentation drivers in Python to accelerate testing.
• Collaborate with software engineers to flash, test, and troubleshoot firmware.
• Lead cross-functional root-cause analysis for non-compliant test results using data-driven methods.

Qualifications

• BS/MS degree or equivalent work experience in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
• 2+ years of experience in electronics characterization and validation testing.
• Hands-on experience with lab instrumentation (oscilloscopes, power supplies, electronic loads, digital multimeters, etc.).
• Strong understanding of electrical engineering fundamentals.
• Working knowledge of vehicle electrical systems and communication buses.
• Experience with Python for scripting and data analysis.

Nice to Have

• Familiarity with low-level firmware and C programming
• Experience with Databricks or similar data environments
• Experience with automated test equipment (ATE)
