Senior Software Engineer - Build, NYC

Responsibilities

• Design and engineer components of Astronomer’s context layer for data modeling, semantic search, retrieval, and code generation.
• Build applied AI systems using LLMs, embeddings, and retrieval techniques for data practitioners and developer tools.
• Solve information retrieval and search problems at global scale using knowledge of data pipelines.
• Collaborate with R&D and product teams to turn early research concepts into product experiences.
• Influence the architecture and technical vision for AI-driven data products.
• Represent Astronomer through open-source contributions, technical talks, and publications.

Requirements

• 5–8 years of software engineering experience with Python or Go.
• Experience with LLMs, vector databases, embeddings, or other applied AI areas, or a strong desire to learn them.
• Interest in improving data professionals’ workflows and comfort with early-stage product development and ambiguity.
• Strong collaboration and communication skills, including the ability to explain complex systems to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Experience or interest in search, information retrieval, large-scale data infrastructure, developer tools, machine learning infrastructure, or agentic systems is preferred.
• Familiarity with Apache Airflow or other orchestration tools and demonstrated open-source contributions are preferred.
