Poll Worker Dispatch and Ballot Delivery Driver San Francisco Department of Elections (1402 Junior Clerk)
In preparation for the November 3, 2026, Consolidated General Election, the Department is seeking applications for seasonal positions as Poll Worker Dispatch and Ballot Delivery Drivers (1402 Junior Clerk).
Under immediate supervision, employees in these positions perform driving, delivery, dispatch, and basic clerical duties in support of Election Day operations. The primary assignment involves transporting standby poll workers and election supplies between City Hall and polling places throughout San Francisco. Employees may also be assigned to deliver and retrieve ballots and related election materials as part of the Department's Emergency Ballot Delivery Program.
The position requires employees to safely operate a City vehicle, follow assigned routes and instructions, use a smartphone for navigation and communication, maintain contact with Department staff while in the field, and accurately complete assigned deliveries and pickups.
While the primary assignment is on Election Day, November 3, 2026, employees may also be assigned to perform election-related duties before and after Election Day based on the Department's operational needs.
In addition to the range of duties assigned to the 1402 Junior Clerk classification, employees in these positions may perform the following essential duties and responsibilities:
- Safely operate a City sedan, van, or other assigned vehicle to transport standby poll workers, ballots, election supplies, and other materials to and from designated locations throughout San Francisco.
- Transport standby poll workers from City Hall to polling places requiring additional staffing and return poll workers or materials to designated locations as directed.
- Deliver and retrieve ballots and related election materials from voters participating in the Department's Emergency Ballot Delivery Program according to established procedures.
- Follow assigned routes, schedules, delivery instructions, and established procedures while completing field assignments.
- Use a smartphone and navigation applications to locate polling places, voter addresses, and other assigned destinations and to communicate with Department staff.
- Maintain communication with Poll Worker Dispatch staff and promptly report delays, transportation issues, completed assignments, or other circumstances affecting assigned deliveries or pickups.
- Handle and transport ballots, election materials, and supplies carefully and according to established Department procedures.
- Maintain routine delivery, pickup, dispatch, or other basic records as instructed.
- Load, unload, carry, and distribute election supplies and materials associated with assigned deliveries and pickups.
- Assist with Poll Worker Dispatch operations, including basic clerical, organizational, and logistical tasks, as assigned.
- Assist with Voting Center line management, provide polling place support as a poll worker, or assist with other Election Day assignments as needed.
- Perform other basic clerical, election-related, and post-election tasks as assigned based on operational needs.
A mandatory paid 4-hour training will be held on October 29, 2026 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
The primary work assignment is on Election Day, November 3, 2026, with a start time of 5:00 AM at City Hall, where drivers will receive instructions and supplies. The length of the Election Day assignment will depend on operational needs.
Employees may also be scheduled to work before or after Election Day based on the Department's operational needs. Work hours may vary and may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and overtime. Overtime hours are paid at 1.5 times the regular hourly rate.
Work will involve extensive driving throughout San Francisco and frequent entry into and exit from an assigned vehicle. Employees must be comfortable driving for extended periods while safely navigating City streets, locating unfamiliar addresses, and completing multiple assignments throughout the workday.
The position also requires prolonged periods of sitting, frequent use of a smartphone for navigation and communication, and the ability to lift and handle election supplies and materials weighing up to 22 pounds.
This is a temporary exempt, as-needed position. Temporary exempt as-needed employees who have worked more than 1,040 hours in any consecutive 12-month period and whose normal workweek at the time of inclusion in the system is not less than 20 hours may be eligible for health coverage and retirement benefits. Additional information regarding City and County of San Francisco benefits is available through the Department of Human Resources website.
