Scientist

The University of Miami/UHealth department of SCCC has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Scientist to work in Miami FL. The Scientist SOM supports the Universitys research goals and objectives by engaging in complex experiments and investigations in a range of areas depending on specialty and interests. Moreover an employee in this position contributes to the scientific community and promotes the Universitys reputation as a leader in the field.

• Oversees research employees students and other relevant staff.
• Authors scientific publications technical and agency reports and patent applications.
• Assists in the development of training materials for research staff.
• Plans experiments and records and analyzes findings.
• Prepares research proposals and funding applications.
• Ensures that all activities are in compliance with applicable quality and regulatory standards.
• Maintains current knowledge of relevant scientific and technical developments.
• Presents ongoing work and findings to colleagues at academic conferences.
• Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Department Specific Functions

The Scientist SOM (A) carries out an independent and collaborative research agenda focused on translational research across all Site Disease Groups. The position supports the collection analysis annotation and characterization of biospecimens including those obtained through operating room-based workflows and works closely with clinical pathologists surgeons and multidisciplinary research teams. The role contributes to scientific discovery through publications grant-supported research biospecimen-based studies and the development of innovative approaches that advance the Universitys research mission and leadership in precision medicine.

• Conducts independent and collaborative research focused on all Site Disease Groups.
• Performs detailed annotation curation and quality control of pathology specimens and associated clinical histologic and molecular data.
• Conducts pathology analyses on fresh tissue specimens including specimens collected directly in the operating room (OR) and supports tissue procurement and processing workflows.
• Collaborates closely with clinical pathologists surgeons the Brain Tumor Institute and multidisciplinary research teams to support translational research initiatives and biospecimen-based studies.
• Contributes to the development maintenance and utilization of disease-focused tissue banks registries databases and biospecimen repositories in compliance with IRB HIPAA and institutional policies.
• Ensures aliquots of tissue and blood specimens are contributed to the Biorepository Shared Service Resource (BSSR) for centralized storage annotation and future research use in coordination with institutional stakeholders.
• Analyzes experimental and clinicopathologic data interprets findings within the context of disease biology and prepares figures tables reports and summaries for scientific dissemination.
• Authors and co-authors manuscripts abstracts presentations and other scholarly works for submission to peer-reviewed journals and scientific meetings.
• Assists in the preparation of extramural grant applications (e.g. NIH foundation and industry-sponsored awards) including development of specific aims research strategies methodologies and supporting documentation.
• Supports the integration of emerging technologies including digital pathology image analysis artificial intelligence/machine learning tools spatial biology and molecular profiling approaches into research workflows.
• Establishes and maintains effective partnerships with the Department of Pathology clinical services and research support programs to facilitate efficient tissue acquisition annotation and research operations.
• Ensures accurate documentation data integrity quality assurance and reproducibility of all research activities in accordance with departmental institutional and regulatory standards.
• Mentors trainees fellows junior faculty and research staff involved in pathology and translational research projects as appropriate.
• Collaborates with clinical pathologists surgeons and research teams to support intraoperative tissue procurement molecular characterization and translational research workflows.
• Works with researchers and clinical partners to develop implement and optimize research methodologies workflows and end products.
• Contributes to the annotation curation and quality assurance of pathology specimens and associated clinical histologic and molecular data.
• Ensures aliquots of tissue and blood specimens are contributed to the Biorepository Shared Service Resource (BSSR) for centralized storage annotation and future research use in coordination with relevant institutional stakeholders.
• Provides ready access to all experimental data for managing staff and maintains accurate complete and reproducible research records.
• Requests or acquires equipment and supplies for assigned projects.
• Uses the internet surveys legal documents databases and other available resources to collect and analyze information.

• Doctorate degree - Philosophy (PhD) required
• Minimum 10 years of relevant experience required
• Experience in pathology research required.
• Demonstrated expertise in molecular pathology required.
• Experience in genitourinary pathology neuro-oncology pathology or other disease-focused translational research areas preferred.
• Experience working in translational research environments that integrate surgical pathology biospecimen and research workflows preferred.
• Experience with tissue-based research biospecimen annotation molecular characterization and clinicopathologic data analysis preferred.
• Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams including clinical pathologists surgeons and research investigators preferred.

• Ability to learn implement and apply new technologies methodologies and research tools.
• Competence in the use of databases biorepository systems statistical software and standard research applications.
• Knowledge of and adherence to IRB HIPAA biosafety and institutional research compliance requirements.
• Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills with the ability to interpret complex scientific and clinical research data.
• Ability to maintain accurate documentation ensure data integrity and support the reproducibility of research activities.
• Demonstrates professionalism scientific integrity and sound judgment in all research academic and collaborative activities.
