Deputy Sheriff

Protect lives and property, preserve the peace in Pinal County through the patrolling of assigned areas, impartial enforcement of laws, detaining and interviewing violators, apprehension of suspects, and responding to calls for assistance, and develop and maintain effective relationships with residents and community organizations under basic supervision.

*ALL TESTING DATES ARE TENTATIVE AND A SUBJECT TO CHANGE. EVERY APPLICANT MUST APPEAR IN PERSON TO TEST.

Unsuccessful applicants can re-apply and test again after 60 days

This is a registry intended to collect applications for future vacancies containing one or more positions. Eligible applicants might be placed into a registry until a vacant position becomes available.

This requisition is intended ONLY for applicants who are CURRENT members of AZPOST (out-of-state sworn applicants; please see minimum requirements below).

You must attach verification of most current POST continuing and proficiency training and firearms qualifications.

Per PCSO Policy 703 – After FTO, employees may take home county-owned vehicles only with prior approval from their Bureau Chief. The employee must live within a 10-mile limit from the Pinal County Border.

This position is a non-exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act and is a covered position under the Pinal County Merit System Rules. In accordance to Merit Rule 11.3, Types of Probationary Employment Periods, an employee who is transferred or promoted shall be required to serve a 12 (twelve) month probationary employment period.

Deputy Sheriff Lateral hiring process:

1. AZPOST Personal History Form - If all minimum requirements are met, you may be contacted via email to complete an AZPOST Personal History Form. You will need to provide Human Resources with your confirmation number. You have 3 days to complete this step.

2. Schedule Testing Date - If all criteria is met, you may be contacted by PCSO Human Resources via email to schedule a testing date.

3. Testing Day - The testing day consists of a written test and a preliminary background review.

4. Written Test - An essay-style test is used to measure comprehension, grammar, and handwriting skills. You must complete this test with a passing grade to advance further in the testing process.

5. Preliminary Background Review - You will meet with a Background Investigator and answer a short questionnaire. You will need to have all documents required with you on testing day. If all criteria are met, the Background Investigator will notify Human Resources to submit your personal information into ESOPH.

6. ESOPH Background - You will be sent a link to sign in, answer questions and upload any documents required. You have seven (7) days to complete.

7. Background Review - Once your background information has been reviewed and all required criteria have been met, you may be scheduled for a final background review.

8. Command Review - Once your background check is complete, our command staff will review it. Upon approval, you may be invited to a Command Interview.

9. Conditional Offer - Once you have passed all steps, you may be extended a conditional offer of employment. At this time, you will also be scheduled for a polygraph, gun qualifications and medical review.

10. Medical Appointments - In order to proceed in the hiring process, you will need to successfully complete a psychological evaluation, polygraph test and a medical exam.

11. Command Interview - You will meet and talk with the Command Staff. Upon approval, you will be extended a conditional offer of employment. At this time, you will also be scheduled for a psych evaluation and medical review.

12. AZPOST Audit - Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST) will conduct an audit on all candidates' background files to ensure minimum qualifications and standards for sworn peace officers are met.

13. Official Offer - Once you have passed all steps successfully, you may be extended an official offer and be scheduled a date to attend New Hire Orientation.

PCSO Sworn Selection Guidelines:

Application: Applicant will not receive nor are entitled to a copy of the contents of their test results. No documents, copies of reports submitted by the applicant will be returned. No documents, reports or information utilized for, or obtained, during the selection process will be furnished to the applicant. Applicant will not be advised of the reason(s) for non-selection.

Drug Use: Marijuana, steroids, Adderall, dangerous drugs, narcotics, hallucinogens, prescription drugs, theft, acts constituting a felony or any conviction for domestic violence involving physical violence, fraud or misrepresentation, driving record, previous positions held, military service.

Typical Classification Essential Duties:

  • Enforce local, state and Federal laws, enforce compliance with local regulations and ordinances, according to Pinal County Sheriff's Office (PCSO) policies, procedures, post orders and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and make proper decisions using sound judgment.
  • Respond to various types of emergency calls, secure and document crime scenes, conduct initial investigation by collecting evidence, and communicate directions to staff personnel and general public.
  • Provide crisis intervention and mediation for subjects in emotional distress.
  • Control crime scene, resolve disputes, and assist other emergency responders.
  • Inform residents about community programs and resources.
  • Patrol assigned areas, looking for illegal, hazardous, and suspicious activities and persons, conduct traffic stops and investigate traffic accidents and criminal violations, investigate criminal and civil complaints and incidents, and interrogate, communicate, and assist with victims, witnesses, and suspects in cases.
  • Arrest law violators, locate, pursue, and arrest criminal suspects, transport and process prisoners, serve arrest, search, and civil warrants and other court documents, and complete detailed reports and required technical paperwork.
  • Provide courtroom testimony when summoned, provide factual statement of incidents, present evidence relating to cases before the court, and assist in the prosecution of criminal and civil cases.
  • Maintain vehicles and equipment in clean and effective operating order.
  • Assist and interact with other Sheriff's personnel, County departments, outside organizations and businesses, and Federal, state, and local law enforcement organizations in order to define and resolve law enforcement issues.
  • May be assigned to special operations, enforcement, intervention, investigative and tactical teams, including search & rescue, K-9, armory, traffic, civil process, SOP, training, evidence, court records, and liaison with other agencies.
  • Update PCSO files, records, and event logs, maintain appropriate records, and prepare accurate and timely reports as required.
  • Maintain the integrity, professionalism, values, and goals of the Sheriff's Office by assuring that all rules and regulations are followed, and that accountability and public trust are preserved.
  • To promote and adhere to the workplace values of accountability, commitment, and teamwork to help enrich lives beyond expectation.
  • Maintain absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, customer records, and restricted County information.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Minimum Requirements to Perform Work:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Must be a minimum of twenty-one (21) years of age, a United States citizen, and demonstrate the ability to successfully complete written, psychological, polygraph, physical or stress test, gun qualifications, pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and background examinations.
  • AZPOST Certified
  • 12 months of full time employment as a Sworn Peace Officer (12 months of patrol duties required; detention/correctional duties are not eligible)
  • Valid Arizona State Driver's License.
  • Must pass a thorough background investigation.
  • *MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR OUT OF STATE LATERAL APPLICANTS:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Must be a minimum of twenty-one (21) years of age, a United States citizen, and demonstrate the ability to successfully complete psychological, polygraph, physical or stress test, gun qualifications, pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and background examinations.
