General Description The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) seeks an Emergency Communications Lead Technician for District 5 (north‑western Wyoming). This role provides oversight and expert systems support for emergency communications infrastructure, including radio, telephone, and data wiring, as well as wireless Ethernet and Wi‑Fi to essential roadside assets to support law enforcement and public‑safety agencies. Position Overview Lead Technician oversight of two technicians; field support for repairs; obtain all required certifications. Key Responsibilities Plan, oversee, and perform technical integration, installation, repair, monitoring, and maintenance of public safety land mobile radio systems and related equipment. Plan, oversee, and perform technical integration, installation, repair, and maintenance of data circuits and networks. Maintain and prepare all area field Emergency Communications parts, inventory, test equipment, and records. Assist in preparing the annual Emergency Communications budget. Maintain proper files and configurations of equipment in various databases. Oversee assigned technicians and contractors; participate in installation, modification, maintenance, and repair of emergency communications buildings, sites, towers, cabling, and power systems. Inspect and support state‑owned infrastructure and assist other entities with issues. Provide technical support to technicians statewide; report to the System Manager and Program Manager. Directly responsible for approximately 475 mobile, portable, and base systems. Monitor daily wireless Ethernet nodes; on call for critical systems. Coordinate with non‑emergency Communications planners and system users. Assist Emergency Communications staff in other districts, including occasional overnight stays. Act as a local District supervisor during the absence of the Emergency Communications Systems Supervisor. Qualifications Bachelor's Degree (typically in Telecommunications, Information Technology, Network Administration, Electronics, or related field). 1–3 years of progressive technical operations experience, or 4–6 years with supervisory responsibilities. F.C.C. General Radio Operators License (GROL) or equivalent within nine months of employment. State of Wyoming Class C Driver's License. CPR/First Aid certification is desirable. Knowledge and Skills In‑depth knowledge of antenna theory, coaxial and waveguide, surge suppression devices, RF oscillators, transmitters, amplifiers, receivers, spectrum analyzers, and related test equipment. Familiarity with RF safety principles, tower climbing, and high‑traffic work zones. Vehicle electronics and construction skills for integrating non‑OEM equipment. Ability to dismantle and reassemble major vehicle components without damage. Proficiency in maintaining generators, HVAC, battery banks, grounding systems, and safety equipment. Ground management practices for emergency sites. Leadership and motivational techniques for diverse teams. Effective on‑the‑job training across skill levels. Physical Working Conditions 24/7 on‑call for outage repairs; may be on‑call for brief periods. Operate 4‑wheel drive vehicles towing up to 25,999 lbs on‑ and off‑road in inclement weather. Travel across extreme snow‑covered terrain; may use snowshoes or other methods. Operate snowcats in extreme conditions; access remote sites 24/7. Work alone in remote areas at all hours and in all weather. Perform tower and antenna work up to 200 ft; lift up to 50 lbs. Manage time and make decisions in unusual circumstances. Other Requirements FLSA: Non‑exempt. Must pass a background/reference check; fingerprint check required. Position will be offered in Basin, Wyoming. Department is a drug‑free workplace.
