Senior Firmware Engineer

AJD Consulting Solutions is supporting the search for a Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer to join an established engineering organization developing innovative electrical and connected-device technologies. About the Role This is an opportunity for an experienced firmware engineer who enjoys working at the intersection of embedded software, electronics, hardware integration, and product development. You’ll play a key role in bringing new products from concept through development, testing, certification, and production while also supporting and improving existing products. Responsibilities Design, develop, debug, and integrate embedded firmware for new and existing products. Develop firmware for applications including switches, dimmers, receptacles, GFCI/AFCI products, and other connected electrical devices. Participate directly in hardware development, including schematic interpretation, hardware/firmware partitioning, board bring-up, and mixed hardware/software debugging. Develop firmware that interfaces with low-rate wireless networks such as IEEE 802.15.4, Zigbee, or similar technologies. Create and execute comprehensive firmware and hardware test strategies, including test plans, automated and manual testing, debugging, and root-cause analysis. Support products throughout their lifecycle, including firmware maintenance, field issue resolution, design changes, and production support. Work with serial communication protocols including RS-232, I²C, and similar interfaces, as well as IP-based communications protocols. Utilize Agile or Kanban development processes and tools such as Azure DevOps to plan, track, and manage engineering work. Collaborate with Engineering Leadership, Product Management, Design, and Systems Engineering to align firmware development with product and business priorities. Communicate technical designs, project assignments, and development status effectively to both engineering teams and leadership. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field. 5+ years of embedded software or firmware development and testing experience. At least 5 years of experience developing firmware for new products. Required Skills Strong proficiency in C programming and hands-on experience developing and debugging microcontroller-based systems. Strong understanding of hardware/software interaction, microcontroller peripherals, and low-level system behavior. Experience working directly with schematics, PCB layouts, and PCB assembly documentation, preferably using Altium or a similar tool. Solid understanding of analog and digital circuit fundamentals, including power, signal integrity, interfaces, sensors, and actuators. Experience with wireless technologies such as Zigbee, IEEE 802.15.4, or comparable protocols. Experience developing products in regulatory or compliance-driven environments, including UL, FCC, or similar standards. Experience using Azure DevOps or comparable development/project-management platforms within Agile or Kanban environments. Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues and perform root-cause analysis. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to both engineering teams and leadership. Preferred Skills Experience with additional programming languages or development tools. Familiarity with advanced debugging techniques and tools. Pay range and compensation package Salary Range: $139,500 – $163,700.
