URGENT Clinical Secretary/Referral Specialist Opening

This is a temporary position to assist with managing work queues due to a backlog in a physician's office. The role involves working Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM.

This person is responsible for managing the daily work queues related to patient referrals, imaging orders, prior authorizations, and appointment scheduling within a busy spine center. This individual serves as a key liaison between patients, providers, imaging facilities, insurance companies, and referring offices to ensure timely coordination of care and a seamless patient experience.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage and prioritize referral, authorization, and scheduling work queues within the EHR.
• Obtain prior authorizations for imaging studies, procedures, and specialty services.
• Verify insurance eligibility and benefits.
• Coordinate MRI, CT, X-ray, EMG, and other diagnostic testing appointments.
• Communicate with patients regarding scheduling, preparation instructions, and authorization status.
• Follow up on pending referrals, authorization requests, and incomplete documentation.
• Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, medical assistants, and administrative staff to facilitate patient care.
• Document all patient and payer communications accurately within the EHR.
• Monitor work queue metrics to ensure timely processing and resolution of assigned tasks.
• Serve as a resource for patients and referring providers regarding referral and authorization requirements.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree preferred.
• Minimum 2 years of experience in a medical office, specialty practice, or healthcare setting.
• Experience with prior authorizations, referrals, scheduling, and insurance verification preferred.
• Knowledge of medical terminology, spine care, orthopedics, neurosurgery, or pain management is a plus.
• Experience with EHR systems and electronic work queues.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
• Excellent communication and customer service skills.

Preferred Skills

• Experience working in a spine, orthopedic, neurosurgical, or pain management practice.
• Strong understanding of commercial, Medicare, and workers' compensation authorization requirements.
• Ability to independently manage high-volume work queues while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.

Job Type & Location

This is a contract position based out of New Haven, CT.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $27.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
