The Prince George's County Police Department is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill a Mental Health Clinician (Counselor 4G), grade G27 position, in the Psychological Services Unit . About the Position
This is a clinical and administrative work position involving responsibility in the areas of clinical psychology, forensic psychology, and clinical social work. Personnel allocable to this position report directly to the Division Manager and function as licensed mental health clinicians at the full professional level.
This position is responsible for providing emergency psychological intervention as part of a 24-hour-a-day service to police department employees and their relatives. Work involves addressing job-related stress and trauma, in addition to providing couples, family, and adolescent counseling. The incumbent will develop assessment techniques designed to evaluate psychological or behavioral traits within the County workforce. Work also involves conducting psychological interviews and psychotherapy; and will develop and deliver classroom instruction related to crisis intervention and in-service training to department personnel.
Job duties are performed with a high degree of competency in providing services to clients and/or in developing psychological profiles. Work is performed under close supervision of the Division Manager and is evaluated based upon reports and conferences designed to achieve treatment goals and program objectives. The work of this role is highly complex, and the ideal candidate must be detail-oriented, conscientious, and a hands-on team player. Candidates must exhibit excellent communication and debriefing skills, have a track record of working collaboratively with others, and be comfortable with working on a rotating, on-call schedule 24-hours-a-day, for at least one week each month.

Clinical Services:
- Provides direct clinical care to a large departmental client base by assessing and evaluating problems, diagnosing issues, and providing therapeutic interventions.
- Performs critical incident interventions for departmental personnel involved in on/off duty shootings, dangerous or serious crime situations, traumatic incidents, etc.
- Performs clinical assessments for the Department in the areas of excessive force complaints, job performance problems, and documented domestic relation problems.
- Provides emergency 24-hours on-call crisis intervention services in highly-stressful and/or dangerous situations, and consults and advises department command staff with psychologically relevant informant on-scenes where safety of one or many is in question.
- Serves as a member of a professional psychological services team; plans psychoeducational treatment programs in conjunction with departmental policies and procedures; provides on-site and follow-up clinical care in response to a wide variety of client needs.
- Develops, provides, and delivers classroom instruction and in-service training to department personnel.
- Conducts trainings including, but not limited to, crisis interventions; abnormal psychology; domestic violence; leadership; stress management; substance abuse.
- Develops in-service course content to meet the current needs of the department.
- Develops creative strategies to respond to law enforcement, social, and environmental concerns.

- Master's degree from an accredited College or University in Counseling, Social Work, or a closely related field; or Doctoral degree in Counseling, Social Work, or Psychology.
