Speech-Language Pathologist

The primary responsibilities of the speech-language pathologist are to identify and assess individuals who may have speech/language/hearing disorders and to recommend appropriate therapeutic and instructional intervention.

Job tasks/responsibilities include:

• Organizes and implements a speech and language screening process in a time frame or sequence consistent with district directors.
• Assists in the identification of hearing disorders and makes recommendations for diagnostic evaluations.
• Diagnoses speech and language disorders and makes referrals for additional diagnostic testing, when indicated, and maintains relevant records.
• Develops a speech therapy schedule consistent with placement and frequency as indicated on the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for each student.
• Conducts therapy sessions consistent with clinical intervention practices.
• Informs classroom teachers and other appropriate school personnel of progress of students receiving speech/language/hearing services.
• Develops and maintains communication with other allied professionals.
• Contains professional growth through a review of the literature, membership in professional organizations, attendance at professional meetings and participation at inservice programs.
• Promotes the acceptance, support and utilization of speech/language/hearing services in the school and the community.
• Meets and consults with parents, administrators and others to develop individual educational plans for students who are speech and/or language impaired.
• Participates in transition planning.

This is light work which includes the following physical activities: bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, twisting, reaching, sitting, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing and visual acuity. The work is performed primarily indoors.
