Pharmacy Technician - Discharge Pharmacy

Job Description

Under the supervision of a registered pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician will:

• Process and distribute prescriptions and over-the-counter medications to patients at discharge
• Enter prescription data into the computer system and maintain accurate records in compliance with pharmacy standards
• Handle patient payments and process billing transactions, including insurance verification and prior authorization requests
• Stock, organize, and maintain pharmacy inventory with attention to expiration dates and proper storage conditions
• Communicate and interact professionally with patients and healthcare staff, including nursing and discharge planning teams
• Provide basic medication counseling and patient education under pharmacist supervision, ensuring patients understand proper medication usage
• Verify prescription accuracy and completeness prior to patient pickup, flagging any discrepancies for pharmacist review
• Coordinate with clinical departments to ensure timely medication availability for patient discharge
• Handle controlled substances and other restricted medications in accordance with state and federal regulations

Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent required. Minimum of six (6) months of retail pharmacy experience preferred.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED: Requires valid State of Michigan Pharmacy Technician license.
