Engineer IV, Safety Analysis & V&V
$160k - $185kX-Energy, LLC
Job Description This role supports the Risk Informed Safety Analysis team that conducts nuclear safety analysis for X‑energy technology (e.g., Xe‑100) licensing and design, with a focus on thermo‑hydraulic analysis. The Safety Analysis Engineer leads thermo‑hydraulic safety evaluations, ensures compliance with NRC regulatory guidance (including RG1.203), and collaborates with engineering disciplines to establish design requirements derived from safety analysis. Key Responsibilities Perform comprehensive thermo‑hydraulic safety analysis for assigned systems and accident scenarios using approved system analysis codes and methodologies in accordance with NRC regulatory guidance (RG1.203) and X‑energy procedures. Conduct transient and accident analysis evaluating core heat removal, coolant flow behavior, heat transfer mechanisms, and temperature distributions during anticipated operational occurrences, design basis events, and beyond design basis hazards to demonstrate adequate core cooling and defense‑in‑depth. Support the development and maintenance of SSC safety classifications through thermo‑hydraulic analysis, providing analytical results that demonstrate component performance and safety function capability during accident scenarios and operational transients. Develop and maintain Phenomena Identification and Ranking Tables (PIRTs) to identify and rank thermo‑hydraulic phenomena relevant to reactor safety for various accident scenarios and operational transients. Conduct scaling analyses to demonstrate applicability of experimental data and analytical methods to the Xe‑100 design, documenting the technical basis for code applicability. Establish thermo‑hydraulic safety limits, safety margins, and acceptance criteria for safety analyses based on regulatory requirements, fuel temperature limits, material temperature limits, and fission product barriers. Support probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) activities by providing deterministic thermo‑hydraulic analysis results, identifying initiating events, and integrating deterministic and risk‑informed approaches. Develop technical documentation for regulatory submittals, including safety analysis reports, code applicability reports, and responses to NRC requests for additional information. Ensure thermo‑hydraulic safety analysis work products comply with NQA‑1 quality assurance requirements and X‑energy procedures; maintain documentation to NQA‑1 standards. Provide technical input to design teams on cooling requirements, flow path constraints, heat removal capabilities, and operational limitations. Review and approve thermo‑hydraulic safety analysis work products from analysts, subcontractors, and partners to ensure technical adequacy, regulatory compliance, and consistency with the overall safety case. Lead small teams of safety analysts in executing complex thermo‑hydraulic safety evaluations and producing integrated safety analysis documentation. Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior analysts on analysis methodologies, system code application, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices. Collaborate with engineering disciplines (neutronics, structural, materials, reactor systems) to ensure consistency of safety analysis assumptions with design basis and safety‑derived requirements. Interface with regulatory agencies, industry partners, and external stakeholders to support the technical basis for X‑energy’s thermo‑hydraulic safety analysis approach and licensing strategy. Assess quality of information given and ask pertinent questions to stakeholders to validate the sound technical foundation of safety analysis. Provide frequent updates to Xe‑100 Team leads and promptly communicate adverse findings or technical concerns related to safety limits and margins. Maintain professional demeanor in all communications and execute assignments with clear objectives and independent technical judgment. Perform additional duties as assigned by management. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in nuclear, chemical, mechanical engineering, or related field from an accredited institution. Typically ten years of experience in an engineering role in a relevant field. Master’s degree may substitute for two years of experience; Ph.D. may substitute for three years. Specialized knowledge in safety analysis and previous experience with verification and validation (V&V) or computer‑generated data (CGD) activities. Experience performing thermo‑hydraulic safety analysis and supporting regulatory submittals. Strong analytical skills and proficiency with system analysis codes. Location 530Gaither Road, Rockville,MD; Remote eligible. Work Site Expectations Local office with remote eligibility; hours 8:00am–5:00pm, Monday–Friday. Compensation Salary range: $160,000–$185,000 (based on education, training, experience, and qualifications). Benefits Robust benefits package including 401(k) plan with employer match; medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance; paid time off; and tuition reimbursement for professional development. Equal Employment Opportunity Statement An Equal Opportunity Employer.
