This examination will fill future vacancies at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation.

If you pass the examination, your name will appear on the continuous eligible list for one year. After one year, your name will be removed from the list. You may apply for retest at six-month intervals.

Examples of Duties

A Nursing Care Coordinator supervises and performs professional nursing care given to patients, utilizing the nursing process at Erie County Medical Center Corporation;

Supervises and directs the complete nursing service of a number of patient care units within a specific area or the complete nursing service on off shifts, weekends or holidays;

Plans, schedules, assigns and supervises the work activities of all professional and non-professional nursing personnel in the area;

Evaluates and directs all nursing activities using quality assurance standards;

Makes rounds and evaluates quality of care being rendered, condition of patient, and maintenance of the area;

Develops and implements the nursing plan of care, using the nursing process, for assigned patients;

Records and reports on patient's responses, and collaborates with appropriate members of the health team;

Identifies those components of the nursing plan of care which may be delegated to allied nursing personnel and provides necessary guidance;

Maintains professional competence through participation in continuing education and other appropriate learning experiences;

Confers with physicians regarding care and treatment methods, and cooperates in providing services as requested; Participates in the discharge and transfer of patients;

Plans and arranges for relief of staff and allots time for work, off-duty, meals and vacations;

Assists in training of student nurses assigned to section through on-the-job instruction and supervision of work;

Supervises maintenance of records of nursing care and medical treatment rendered by nursing staff;

Requests supplies and equipment for the area served; monitors use of supplies and equipment in a fiscally responsible manner;

Participates in in-service training as programmer or instructor;

Plans, assesses and evaluates the orientation of staff and equipment, emergency procedures and disaster plan;

Ensures that ECMCC and departmental policies are adhered to;

Counsels and disciplines employees;

Participates in nursing and hospital committees;

Completes performance evaluations;

Manages internal and external disasters effectively;

Completes incident reports and client concern forms as required.

Accesses administrative staff appropriately for issue notification and/or assistance in resolution;

Completes staffing effectiveness and nursing care hour reports.

Minimum Qualifications

Revised 2025 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must meet the following requirements:

Possession of a bachelor's degree* in Nursing and three years of registered professional nursing experience, one year of which was in a supervisory or administrative capacity.

Possession of a license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State at time of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment; and:

Possession of Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification from an ECMCC approved provider at time of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment; and:

Possession of Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Certification from an ECMCC approved provider within six (6) months of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment; and:

Possession of Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification from an ECMCC approved provider within six (6) months of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment; and:

Completion of New York State Office of Mental Health-Bureau of Education and Workforce Development (BEWD) certified safety program within three (3) months of appointment and participation in annual re-training.

1. *Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. 2. Supervision Responsible direction and control of subordinate employees. This involves the assignment of work, approval of work, training, evaluation and discipline of employees. The supervisory aspects must be an integral part of the job, not incidental or occasional.

3. Administrative experience is defined as the responsible planning, management and control functions of an organization or organizational unit including the development and/or approval of operating policy and procedure.

4. Educational and/or age requirements must be met no later than 12 months past the announced exam date . Eligibility for appointment will be subject to candidates providing proof that education and/or age requirements have been met within one year of the announced exam date. Documentation/proof of education and/or age should be provided at time of interview. If documentation does not prove that requirements were met within one year of exam date candidates will be removed from further eligibility for appointment.

Notice to Candidates: Transcripts will now be accepted by the Department of Personnel ONLY at time of application. All subsequent transcripts must be submitted at time of interview.

Supplemental Information

The only subject of examination will be an evaluation of your training and experience. You are therefore, asked to include in your application a summary of all pertinent training and experience in sufficient detail so that your background may be evaluated against the duties of the position.

In your summary of training include all college course work, formal in-service training, and seminars you have attended. You must specify either the number of credits received or the number of contact hours and dates of attendance. Also include a copy of your professional license. Specify the date that your license was first issued.

In your summary of experience, you must specify the dates of your employment, the number of hours worked per week, your title, and the main duties for each. Be specific; vagueness and ambiguity will NOT be resolved in your favor. Candidates who submit incomplete applications or documentation may be disqualified.

A medical examination may be required before appointment.

MILITARY STATUS: If you expect to enter military service, you may still compete in this examination and may be appointed or reinstated after you return home from active duty.

VERIFICATION OF QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates may be investigated or called for an interview to determine whether they qualified for appointment. In addition to meeting specific requirements, candidates and appointees must be of good moral character and habits.

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: Candidates may be subject to a thorough background investigation to determine suitability for appointment. Applicants may be required to authorize access to educational, employment, criminal history and other records check as part of such investigation. Criminal convictions or other offense are subject to evaluation and may result in disqualification. Applicant will be required to submit the necessary fees for the fingerprint processing, where required.

VETERANS: Disabled and non-disabled veterans as defined in Section 85, New York State Civil Service Law, will have 5 and 2.5 points, respectively, added to their earned scores if successful in the examination. You should claim these credits when you file application but you have an option to waive them any time prior to appointment. If you have already used these credits you may not claim them again.
