Neurodiagnostic Technician

The Neurodiagnostic Technician applies knowledge to produce high-quality neurodiagnostic studies. This role requires meeting or exceeding department guidelines and standards. The technician shall have thorough knowledge and proficiency in the skills of neurodiagnostic practice and procedures. Core EEG functions include routine outpatient and inpatient EEGs. The technician performs prolonged routine EEGs to rule out ECS (brain death). Long-term continuous EEG monitoring for patients is also included. Outpatient event monitoring is a key responsibility. The technician utilizes the 10-20 system for electrode placement. Adaptation to individual patients within the 10-19 system is essential as indicated. Advanced EEG functions include VEEG inpatient event monitoring. The technician monitors multiple patients' EEG and video in the EMU. Appropriate notations on the EEG record must be made as necessary. Active evaluation of patients during clinical events is required. Notification of physicians and/or nurses is critical as necessary. Monitoring patients scheduled for ictal SPECT and observing VEEG to detect seizure onset is expected. The technician assists nursing and nuclear medicine staff regarding appropriate clinical scenarios. EEGs may be performed in the Interventional Radiology lab during procedures. Intracarotid EEG recording and intra-operative EEG brain mapping are also part of the role. Quality and safety assurance measures are crucial to prevent injury during clinical events. Compliance with standards related to electrical safety and infection control is required. Potential risks such as poor electrode connections and electrical interference must be understood. Education provided to patients regarding neurodiagnostic procedures is a key part of the role. The technician continually strives to improve competency and obtain new skills. Additional non-EEG functions include performing evoked potentials and SSEP.
