Position Summary Reporting to the Senior Director for Integrated Media Communications, the Assistant Director of Media Relations supervises media relations staff and leads the development and execution of media strategies that promote major university initiatives and institutional storytelling. The role requires evaluating and elevating activities into compelling, audience-centered narratives, demonstrating exceptional writing and editing skills, and working closely with marketing, communications, development, and senior administrators. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent plus 10 years of professional experience including 3 years of supervisory experience. Preferred: Five or more years of related professional experience. Experience working in higher education or a complex organizational environment. Experience supporting executive or senior leadership communications. Supervisory or team leadership experience. Responsibilities Supervises the Media Relations staff and assists with duties such as news distribution, monitoring, reporting, overseeing distribution lists, and necessary training (30%). Produces, writes, and edits communications materials—including press releases, media pitches, and feature stories—ensuring clear, accurate content aligned with institutional messaging, brand standards, and AP style; provides editorial oversight (25%). Coordinates and responds to media requests, contributes to issues management, crisis communications, and emergency communications, and serves as backup for the managing editor (20%). Oversees Media Relations team operations in the absence of the Senior Director, providing leadership and continuity while serving as spokesperson as needed (20%). Collaborates with campus partners to identify, develop, and elevate newsworthy stories, providing consultation and guidance on messaging, media strategy, and best practices for external communications (15%).
