Position Summary Under the general direction of the Histology laboratory manager, performs a wide variety of laboratory tests and procedures of moderate complexity (histology and immunohistochemistry) as defined by CLIA ’88 in a diagnostic laboratory. Makes detailed observations, analyzes data, and records results. Duties include performing microtomy on various types of surgical specimens, tissue preparation of frozen sections, standard hematoxylin and eosin–stained sections, and special histochemical stains including chromogenic and fluorescent dyes and in situ hybridization. Maintains laboratory equipment and inventory levels for laboratory supplies. Position Histotechnologist II Department Pathology Lab Schedule Part Time Essential Responsibilities / Duties Perform routine and special paraffin sections of surgical and autopsy tissue for microscopic examination in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Perform muscle biopsies, nerve biopsies, and other histopathological laboratory tests to obtain data for diagnosis. Prepare equipment for processing, embedding, cutting, complex staining, IHC, special staining, and mounting tissue. Operate and maintain automated tissue staining equipment and coverslippers. Provide technical guidance to laboratory personnel and train other histology technicians on procedures and equipment. Maintain logs and prepare regular and special reports on procedures for specific tissue. Prepare chemicals (mix/dilute/reconstitute solutions, reagents, stains), buffers, and fixatives; label slides; ensure compliance with quality control standards and laboratory procedure manuals. Dispose of chemicals according to hospital guidelines. Cross‑train in other areas of pathology and/or laboratory departments such as electron microscopy, frozen section service, and special pathology. Process fresh and fixed tissue specimens for surgical, anatomical, and investigative histology preparations under supervision. File specimen blocks and glass slides; assist in specimen dissection, accessioning, gross description, fixation, and processing. Receive and process tissues or blood samples for microscopic review. Use computer systems, including accessioning, verification, and entry of patient demographics in CoPath software. Calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment, record test results, prepare control slides, and perform preventative maintenance and QC documentation. Clean, wash, and store laboratory supplies, equipment, and work area to ensure chemical safety and infection control. Inform supervisors when consumable supplies need replenishing. Record statistical data and undertake laboratory data management (specimen log‑in, filing, tracking). Maintain specimen accession file in compliance with regulatory requirements and provide test results to authorized personnel. Participate in research and development of new procedures and stains to improve diagnostic testing. Attend departmental continuing education classes. Other Duties Interact with medical staff and co‑workers effectively and professionally. Undertake specimen delivery and mail delivery as necessary. Perform clerical duties such as answering telephone, filing, recording data, and entering information into computer databases for cytology and/or flow cytometry specimens. Utilize hospital's behavioral standards to guide decision making and support the department’s mission and goals. Education High school diploma required. Bachelor’s degree or associate’s degree in clinical laboratory science, biological or health science preferred. Job Requirements High school diploma required. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Histotechnician HT (ASCP) or Histotechnologist HTL (ASCP) certification or eligibility preferred but not required. Experience Minimum of three years’ experience in a pathology laboratory, including specimen processing. Minimum of two to three years’ experience in tissue embedding and microtomy, including small biopsies. Histochemical staining procedure experience preferred. Knowledge And Skills Excellent oral and written communication skills; strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology. Basic computer proficiency, including ability to access, enter, and interpret computerized data; experience with CoPath software is a plus. Demonstrated accuracy in preparing, staining, and mounting tissue sections.
