The Loveland Police Department offers extensive training for individuals hired as Police Officers. Training can take between 6 to 12 months from the date of hire. Police Officers hired by the Loveland Police Department are required to attend a 6-week pre‑service and a 4‑month field training program. Recruit Police Officers are required to attend those training programs as well as a 4‑month Police academy. During those training programs, vacations and additional time off may not be granted due to the training schedule, instructor availability, and attendance requirements. Salary Base salary: $93,695.75 per year After 12‑month probation period: $101,077.83 per year Selection Process FrontLine National Law Enforcement Exam Physical Test Initial/Executive Oral Board Interviews Conditional Job Offer Background Investigation Expected length of selection process from application to hire is 3 to 6 months. Lateral Transfer Eligibility Must possess at least two (2) years of patrol experience as a sworn full‑time law‑enforcement officer. Patrol experience includes: responding to calls for service, community policing, conducting traffic enforcement including impaired driving enforcement, drafting search warrants and affidavits, making physical, custodial arrests upon probable cause, and conducting proactive law‑enforcement activity. Must have satisfactorily completed a formal or informal field training program. Transfers from detention, corrections, parole, or probation assignments do not qualify. If you qualify as a lateral based on the above criteria, please apply here. Responsibilities Patrol the City of Loveland to detect and/or deter illegal activities. Act without direct supervision and exercise independent judgment in complex emergency situations. Evaluate incidents, respond to calls for service, obtain and evaluate information, determine priority and nature of action. Collect, identify, and preserve evidence and personal property. Conduct interviews and interrogations, and make legal admonishments when appropriate. Arrest, detain, search, and preserve safety, including: Approaching and detaining subjects. Making arrests, forcibly if necessary, requiring physical strength and skill. Restraining and subduing suspects. Using reasonable and appropriate force. Legally searching people and property. Applying safety precautions in hazardous situations. Determining use of force and lawful detainment or search. Communicate verbally and in writing, provide public service and interaction, using appropriate oral and written communication. Prepare written reports, utilize computers and other technical equipment. Use two‑way radio for communication. Patrol activities in assigned area, operating a motor vehicle safely in all weather and conditions. Observe conditions, initiate action to potential hazards. Enforce laws and ordinances, monitor and enforce traffic codes. Apply legal and department knowledge, demonstrate working knowledge of laws, codes, and procedures. Testify in civil and criminal court. Serve summonses and arrest warrants. Adhere to department policies and conduct, keep current on laws. Participate in all required training. Adhere to exemplary law‑enforcement code of conduct. Function effectively within the chain of command. Other Duties Accountable for all duties of this job; other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City’s discretion. Perform duties and tasks as assigned. Collateral assignments/specialized assignments as described in policies and procedures. Candidate Requirements At least 21 years old at time of application. Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certification from an approved academy or provisional certificate by hire date. Minimum of 90 quarter hours or 60 semester credit hours or an associate’s degree, or 3 years of active military experience with honorable discharge. Valid driver’s license. Must be able to legally possess and carry a firearm. Meet physical ability test standards set forth in departmental directives. Must read, write, speak, and understand English. Working Environment Must be able to perform physical requirements such as walking, standing, running, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, crawling, bending, climbing, feeling, talking, seeing, hearing, and repetitive motions. Must possess motor skills to operate vehicle, radio, firearms, baton, speed measuring equipment, mace, control device, sobriety testing equipment, computer, telephone, handcuffs, and other investigative tools. Ability to run to apprehend fleeing subjects, rescue endangered persons, separate individuals in conflict, and function for extended periods with little rest. Material & Equipment Used Motor vehicle, handgun, shoulder arms, mace, electronic control device, baton, handcuffs, computer, radio, telephone, speed measuring equipment, Intoxilyzer, flashlight.
