This job is responsible for performing pathology laboratory services to assist Pathologists in providing a diagnosis according to established standards and practices. This job contributes to the organizational objectives by providing the best patient care through pathology testing and diagnosis. Actively promotes a Lean work culture by performing team member duties to ensure consistent use of Lean principles and processes and continuous process improvement. Responsibilities:
* Determine acceptability of specimens, perform laboratory tests in accordance with laboratory policy for assigned section or shift and / or obtain and record results for laboratory tests within established TAT as delegated by the Chief of Pathology. Recognizes normal, abnormal, critical test results. Prepare, embed, cut, stain and perform all processes involved in basic specialized pathology techniques with surgical pathology and autopsy related tissues. Perform special staining techniques to accurately demonstrate the morphology of tissue specimens. Perform frozen section of embedding, cutting and staining.
* Perform immunohistochemistry and in-situ hybridization stains as requested by the pathologist. Initiate, perform, review and troubleshoot quality control of reagents and stains. Maintain all clinical competencies required in section and perform in accordance with laboratory policy to provide accurate test performance of slides, blocks, stains, images and / or documents. Operate and perform daily preventative maintenance of equipment according to written procedures and documents; report equipment malfunctions and request service as necessary. Communicate with physicians, nurses or other requestors by telephone, computer or other method that ensure confidentiality. Participate in instrument and test method validation and correlation studies. Align daily work with individual, section, departmental and organizational goals and objectives.
* Understand and adhere to Lean principles and process such as standard work and maintaining 5S concept in work area realizing that all processes are driven by the needs of the customer.
* Actively looks for ways to improve standard work processes and shares insights to that end with team member, team leaders and group leaders with the same level of importance as performing quality technical work. Promote teamwork and cooperation through helpful, courteous and positive interactions with colleagues. Promote a trusting and secure work environment through supportive, dependable interactions align individual activities with hospital and lab goals and objectives. Actively participate in inventory control and supply chain operations through application of Lean principles. Using an awareness of how the work performed is valued by the customer, perform duties, make decisions, take actions and continually strive to improve work processes.
* Maintain inspection readiness. Demonstrate knowledge and ownership of current inspection requirements for all applicable regulatory and accrediting agencies relating to area of responsibility. Participate in tracers, mock inspections, regulatory reviews and Quality Assurance meetings as required. Attend and participate in shift stand up meetings, staff meetings and Laboratory Town Hall meetings.
* Share knowledge and provide instructions to new employees, students, other technologists, technicians and other staff. Pursue continuing education. Perform other duties and special projects as requested. Read and adhere to all laboratory policies and procedures pertaining to section and document understanding of such.
* Work closely with the Medical Director and/or other pathologists to perform IHC optimizations and validations according to CAP guidelines.
* Perform inventory control on all IHC reagents, supplies, control blocks and slides. Order IHC items as required using Children's supply chain ordering platform.
* Perform quality control on IHC slides.
* Troubleshoot and communicate with supervisor, technical support, and vendors regarding performance issues with all IHC equipment and supplies in a timely manner.
* Insure all IHC QC documents are up to date and accurate.
* Implement and review IHC policies and protocols as needed.
* Mentor/train co-workers on all aspects of IHC staining and equipment. How You'll Be Successful: WORK EXPERIENCE
* At least 1 year previous histology related experience. Experience may include clinical rotation training. Required EDUCATION
* Two-year Associate's degree or equivalent experience Required
* Meet education/training equivalency of CLIA High Complexity Testing personnel Required LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
* HT or HTL (ASCP) or equivalent.
