ELECTRONICS WORKER

The primary purpose of this position is to perform routine and repetitive work in the fabrication, installation, modification, overhaul, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electronic equipment. Responsibilities - Overhauls, repairs, rebuilds, modifies, and maintains electronic equipment of limited complexity such as subassemblies, printed circuit cards, and chassis to complete electronics systems, as a team member or individually under the direction of a higher-grade worker. - Assists higher-grade mechanics in the fabrication, overhaul, modification, installation, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of complete electronic systems, subsystems, and components. - Uses standard hand tools such as drills, chassis punches, wrenches, soldering irons and microsoldering units to remove and replace circuit parts where accurate positioning, appearance, mechanical strength, and electrical integrity are important. - Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment. - Maintains records and documents actions. Drives one or more types of passenger vehicles such as sedans, vans, crew cab pickup trucks, jeeps, and station wagons on the basis of specific trip assignments, or regular schedules. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-2600, Electronic Equipment Installation and Maintenance Group.. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the job of the position without more than normal supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of electrical and electronic theory and construction practices of electronic equipment of limited complexity such as subassemblies, printed circuit cards, and chassis; and of resistors, capacitors, wiring, and transistors. 2. Knowledge of mathematics of the trade, standard test procedures, schematics, test/computer program instructions, technical manuals, and technical directives pertaining to electronics equipment. 3. Skill to operate and apply computerized automatic test equipment, oscilloscopes, signal/pulse generators, frequency counters, and voltmeters. 4. Skill in the use of hand tools such as drills, chassis punches, wrenches, soldering irons, and microsoldering units. 5. Ability to follow specified checkout procedures and compare readings with specified values using automated and standard test equipment, including computer terminals to maintain records and document actions. 6. Ability to remove and replace circuit parts where accurate positioning, appearance, mechanical strength, and electrical integrity are important. Physical Effort: Frequently lifts and carries, unassisted, items weighing up to 40 pounds. Sometimes required to lift and carry items weighing more than 50 pounds with the help of weight handling equipment or with assistance from other workers. The work requires frequent standing, walking, bending, crouching, reaching, and stooping. Climbing and working in high places may be required. Some work may require the aid of magnifying lenses, eye loops, and microscopes to accomplish repairs on miniature components. Working Conditions: Employee typically works in well-lighted, heated, and ventilated areas. Work is sometimes in high and restricted places, under conditions of heat and cold outside in inclement weather. Exposed to the possibility of electric shock, burns from electrical or RF energy or hot solder, and cuts and bruises. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
