Job Summary The Phlebotomy Technician I performs venous and capillary specimen collection, bedside testing, and specimen processing across inpatient and outpatient populations (neonatal, pediatric, adult, and geriatric). This role operates Laboratory Information Systems (LIS), assists with blood donor screening, trains incoming clinical personnel, and supports daily laboratory workflows while maintaining strict aseptic technique and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). - Comprehensive Scope: Build skills in specialized venipunctures, donor screening, and point-of-care testing.
- Perform venipunctures, dermal capillary draws (finger/heel sticks), and routine non-blood collections (nasal, oropharyngeal) using aseptic techniques.
- Perform bedside diagnostic testing and point-of-care procedures per established SOPs.
- Conduct donor interviews, verify vital signs, and collect blood samples in blood bank settings.
- Ensure patient safety, comfort, and privacy in compliance with hospital standards and HIPAA regulations.
- Safely maneuver patient weight and position patients across all age demographics for effective collection.
- Enter, accession, track, and verify orders using Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and Hospital Information Systems (HIS).
- Centrifuge, aliquot, label, and prepare specimens for laboratory testing and transport.
- Maintain clean, stocked, and sanitized phlebotomy trays, work stations, and laboratory equipment.
- Generate laboratory reports and perform result look-ups as requested.
- Deliver high-quality customer service to patients, families, donors, and clinical staff.
- Orient, train, and provide instructional support to students and onboarding personnel.
- Answer phone lines, route inquiries, and communicate effectively during high-volume or high-stress periods.
- Travel via personal vehicle to assigned off-site collection locations, including during adverse weather conditions.
- Basic understanding of or ability to learn Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), aseptic technique, and Universal Precautions.
- Ability to learn and operate LIS/HIS order entry and specimen accessioning systems.
- Strong interpersonal skills, clinical empathy, and high attention to detail in fast-paced environments.
- Activity Frequency:
- Constant (67-100%): Standing, walking, moving between clinical units.
- Frequent (34-66%): Sitting, operating computer systems.
- Occasional (1-33%): Bending, stooping, kneeling, balancing, reaching above shoulder level.
- Lifting & Moving: Frequently lift/carry supplies up to 20 lbs; occasionally lift, push, or pull up to 50 lbs (and maneuver patient weight as needed).
- Dexterity & Vision: Full manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and fine finger movements. 20/40 corrected vision with normal color vision, depth perception, and near/far acuity.
- Sensory & Shift Work: Ability to distinguish audio alarms/telephones, wear extended PPE (masks, gloves), and work flexible shift schedules.
- Clinical and office environments subject to fluctuating workloads, noise, and constant interruptions.
- Exposure to human blood, airborne pathogens, bodily fluids, hazardous chemicals, and x-ray/electromagnetic energy.
- Exposure to moving mechanical parts (centrifuges) and occasional off-site travel in adverse weather.
