Position Description:

DEPARTMENT: RESPIRATORY THERAPY

HOURS: PRN (VARIES)

•Regularly conducts physician-prescribed treatments of a routine nature, operating Intermittent Positive Pressure Breathing Machines (IPPB), oxygen devices, and ultrasonic nebulizers.

•Always demonstrates a conscientious approach in the administration of prescribed medicinal vapors and gases, humidity, and various oxygen concentrations to the respiratory system of the patient.

•Thoroughly explains to each patient the procedure about to be performed; relaxes and assures patient to ensure cooperation and compliance.

•Always verifies correct patient by checking name on requisition with the name on the patient's wristband before a procedure is started.

•Thoroughly reviews a patient's chart and notes any changes in therapy before each procedure; always documents treatments in a neat and complete manner.

•Introduces equipment to the patient and explains the course of treatment to the patient; asks patient if there are any questions, and reviews information as requested.

•Routinely performs chest physical therapy (CPT) treatments involving percussion, postural drainage, and suctioning in order to loosen and mobilize secretions and mucus in the lungs and clear airway blockage in the respiratory system.

•Maintains equipment in a sanitary condition; always is properly supplied when making rounds for patient treatments.

•Routinely performs arterial puncture accurately and operates blood gas analyzer, measuring and determining the acid base balance efficiency of ventilation and metabolism of the respiratory system.

•Regularly sets-up, operates, and monitors ventilators when patient's respiratory system is incapable of adequate spontaneous ventilation.

•Responds to emergency situations/codes immediately and ensures the adequate maintenance of ventilation during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR); performs in a calm and professional manner.

•Daily conducts quality controls when using a blood gas analyzer.

•Must have 800 clinical contact hours in educational program under supervision of Registered Therapist.

•Certification in Respiratory Therapy through NBRC

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE,
CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSING REQUIREMENTS:

1. Graduate of an accredited two-year Respiratory Therapy program is preferred.
2. Current license in the State of Louisiana is required
3. Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support required (CPR)
4. Registration by NBRC required (RRT) Required
5. ACLS & NRP certifications required.
6. Two years of satisfactory clinical experience is desirable.
7. Ability to work safely and accurately with minimal supervision.
