Job Summary

Providence Saint Joseph Hospital in Eureka, California, is seeking an experienced Emergency Room Registered Nurse (ER RN) for a 13-week travel assignment. The ideal candidate will have at least one year of emergency nursing experience and the ability to provide high-quality care to patients with acute illnesses, injuries, trauma, and critical medical conditions.

The Emergency Department treats patients across all age groups, including neonates, infants, children, adults, and geriatric patients. The RN will also provide coverage for the Observation Unit, which accommodates patients held in the Emergency Department.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 1 year of RN experience ; emergency department experience is preferred.
• Active California RN license required before submission; pending licenses are not accepted.
• Required certifications: ACLS, BLS, NIHSS, and PALS.
• TNCC certification is preferred; candidates willing to obtain TNCC before the start date may be considered for screening, subject to manager approval.
• Ability to provide emergency care to adult and pediatric patients.
• Experience with triage, emergency assessments, cardiac monitoring, and critical interventions.
• Previous travel nursing experience is not required; first-time travelers are accepted.
• Willingness to work night shifts and meet weekend requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform rapid patient assessments, triage, and prioritization based on acuity.
• Provide emergency nursing care to patients with acute illnesses, traumatic injuries, and life-threatening conditions.
• Monitor vital signs, cardiac rhythms, neurological status, and patient responses to treatment.
• Establish and maintain IV access, administer medications, and manage emergency infusions.
• Administer blood products and emergency medications as ordered.
• Monitor patients receiving procedural sedation and continuous IV sedation.
• Care for patients requiring respiratory support, including BiPAP/CPAP and mechanical ventilation.
• Assist with intubation, chest tube management, and other emergency procedures as appropriate.
• Recognize and respond to cardiac dysrhythmias, stroke symptoms, and multisystem organ dysfunction.
• Provide care for patients with neurological injuries, orthopedic trauma, psychiatric emergencies, and drug overdoses.
• Follow infection prevention, isolation, and PPE protocols.
• Document assessments, interventions, and patient outcomes accurately.
• Collaborate with physicians and the interdisciplinary healthcare team to ensure safe and effective patient care.
• Provide nursing coverage for the Observation Unit and ER hold patients as required.

• Gunshot wounds and traumatic amputations.
• Traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury.
• Intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring.
• Burns, near-drowning incidents, and pediatric head injuries.
• Psychiatric emergencies, suicidal patients, and acute psychosis.
• Continuous IV paralytics and advanced respiratory management.

Schedule and Assignment Details

• Night shift: 6:00 PM–6:00 AM.
• Three 12-hour shifts per week.
• Weekend requirement: 3 out of every 6 weekends/shifts as specified by the facility
• Patient ratio: approximately 1:4
• Travelers may float to the Observation Unit for ER hold patients.
• Orientation: 40 hours, listed as non-billable.
• Up to two time-off requests may be considered.
• Requested time off must not exceed seven days, according to the job overview.
• Daily census: approximately 105.
• Visits per day: approximately 135.
• Department capacity: 20 rooms and 26 beds.
