Truck Driver

Truck Drivers in the Merit System are responsible for driving a heavy duty truck which requires a CDL (commercial Drivers License) to pick up, transport and deliver personnel, materials, and/or equipment to and from work sites. Employees in this job class are responsible for the efficient and safe operation of an assigned truck, and for performing or scheduling its preventive maintenance and repairs. Work may involve the responsibility of overseeing and/or assisting a small crew of skilled and/or unskilled employees engaged in manual labor in maintenance or construction activities. Employees in this class are responsible for documenting daily activities through written reports.

The pay range for this job varies depending upon the Merit System employing agency.

Minimum qualifications include a Class B commercial driver's license, experience working with or around heavy trucks, and experience conducting a pre-trip inspection.

Typical job duties include overseeing and assisting crews performing activities such as maintaining/clearing right-of-ways, brush and trash removal, cleaning/maintaining storm sewers, patching and repairing roads, etc. Conducting pre-trip inspections on heavy duty trucks, operating a heavy-duty truck to transport and deliver personnel, equipment, and materials to and from work sites, performing wrap-up activities at the conclusion of each day, preparing for work at work sites, reviewing work orders and meeting with supervisor to determine supplies, equipment, and personnel needed on the work site, and overseeing the loading of equipment to ensure it is properly secured prior to departure.

Physical demands include physical exertion required for sustained periods of light physical activity such as walking or standing. May involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs. Work environment includes outdoor worksites such as residential neighborhoods, landfills, etc. Work involves operating heavy equipment such as trucks, as well as a variety of hand tools. Job may require exposure to potentially hazardous work conditions and inclement weather when working outdoors.
