Department: Medical-Surgical Unit

Reports To: Nurse Manager / Director of Nursing

Position Summary

The Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (RN) provides direct and indirect patient care to adult and geriatric patients with a wide variety of medical conditions, surgical procedures, and chronic illnesses. The RN utilizes the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care while collaborating with physicians and interdisciplinary team members to promote positive patient outcomes and ensure safe, high-quality care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive patient assessments and develop individualized plans of care.
• Provide nursing care to patients with acute and chronic medical conditions, post-operative needs, and complex healthcare requirements.
• Administer medications, intravenous therapies, blood products, and treatments in accordance with physician orders and hospital policies.
• Monitor patient condition, vital signs, laboratory results, and response to treatment.
• Recognize changes in patient status and initiate appropriate nursing interventions.
• Coordinate patient care with physicians, advanced practice providers, therapists, case managers, and ancillary staff.
• Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, medications, treatments, disease processes, and discharge instructions.
• Maintain accurate, complete, and timely documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR).
• Participate in interdisciplinary rounds and care planning activities.
• Ensure compliance with infection prevention, patient safety, and regulatory standards.
• Assist with admission, transfer, and discharge processes.
• Serve as a patient advocate and promote a patient-centered care environment.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives and professional development activities.

Required Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
• Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred or required per facility policy.
• Minimum one year of acute care nursing experience preferred; new graduates may be considered based on facility requirements.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills.
• Ability to prioritize and manage multiple patients in a fast-paced environment.
• Knowledge of medical-surgical nursing principles and standards of practice.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
• Proficiency in medication administration and IV therapy.
• Ability to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary healthcare team.
• Competency in electronic medical record documentation.

Physical Requirements

• Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting.
• Ability to lift, transfer, and reposition patients with assistance and appropriate equipment.
• Manual dexterity required for patient care procedures and equipment operation.
• Ability to work varying shifts, weekends, holidays, and on-call assignments as needed.

Preferred Certifications

• Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification (CMSRN)
• Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (MEDSURG-BC)
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
