Special Education Teacher JOB GOAL: Provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical and social growth.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITY:
- Develop Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
- Implement IEPs, assess students' performance, and track their progress
- Update IEPs throughout the school year to reflect students' progress and goals
- Assess students' skills to determine their needs and to develop teaching plans
- Plans a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students
- Collect and analyze student data in order to make effective decisions to maximize achievement
- Guides the learning process toward the achievement of established district/state curriculum goals and benchmarks
- Establishes and communicates clear objectives to the students for all lessons, units, and projects
- Discuss student's progress with parents, teachers, counselors, and administrators
- Prepare and help students with transition plans from grade to grade and after graduation
- Implement state learning standards and IDEA curricula and assessments to meet ambitious academic expectations
- Implement formal and informal assessments to track each individual student's progress and learning needs
- Employs a variety of instructional techniques, strategies, and media that are most appropriate for meeting the needs of the students
- Responsible for insuring that the district's fixed asset procedures are followed
- Ensures classroom and/or instructional environment is attractive, healthful, safe, and conducive to learning, and that materials are assessable to students and in good condition
- Assists in the fostering and promotion of a positive school climate
- Performs other duties as requested or assigned

Skills, Knowledge, Abilities
- Knowledge of Special Education principles, theories, testing, methods, etc. as well as proven methods of maximizing the educational experience of students with special needs.
- Knowledge of differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
- Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
- Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
- Ability to organize and coordinate work.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
- Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
