Job Summary
Under general supervision of the Facilities Maintenance Manager for Mechanical Trades the Lead Plumber may work independently or lead small work groups. When leading these small groups devises and/or revises ways of doing work assigned. The incumbent recommends alternative materials or methods for accomplishing work when applicable; insures successful completion of job; insures that safety regulations are Supervising Plumbers absence the lead takes leadership responsibility for entire shop; determines priorities issues work orders schedules work and coordinates work with other shops and clients communicates with management and participates in continuous improvement programs.
Department Summary
Facilities Management and Development (FMD) a unit within the Administration and Finance Division (AFD) is responsible for the planning design construction operations maintenance and repair of university facilities grounds and infrastructure. FMD consists of four critical and interdependent support departments including Customer & Business Services; Energy Utilities & Sustainability; Facilities Planning & Capital Projects; and Facilities support of the Cal Poly mission the FMD department is committed to sustainability responsible stewardship of natural resources and promoting an inclusive culture that values individual and organizational integrity civility equity and diversity.
Key Qualifications
- Lays out directs and assists with the full range of plumbing work outlined above; leads instructs and works with a small group or crew of Plumbers and assistants; instructs others in safety rules and ensures they are observed; selects and prepares lists of materials for jobs; maintains stock and materials in the warehouse; draws diagrams and sketches of work to be performed; may assist in the design of plumbing systems; leads the Plumbing Shop in the Supervisors absence. On specific projects may coordinate the work of other skilled crafts workers.
- Researching reported problems. Keeping customers informed of the status of work in their area. Checking on customer satisfaction and researching areas which could be improved. Give updates on work in progress discuss problem areas and solutions and receive direction concerning shop activities. Being updated on upcoming events policy changes and long-range goals while reviewing their work assignments and performance
- Responsible for the full range of skilled plumbing work including the installation maintenance inspection modification remodel and repair of mechanical plumbing equipment and fixtures for water gas oil steam sewage fire sprinkler/prevention and refrigeration-related plumbing systems including automated plumbing systems.
Education and Experience
Any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard plumbers apprenticeship program AND two or more years of experience as a journey-level plumber.
Licenses Certifications Credentials:
- Possession of a valid drivers license or the ability to obtain by date of hire. This position may require the ability to obtain AHERA Supervisor certification for asbestos related work and Cal/OSHA Lead training as well as the ability to wear respiratory protection. A Cal/OSHA mandated medical evaluation is required prior to the use of a respirator.
Salary and Benefits
Anticipated Hiring Range:$90612 - $104088 per year
Classification Range: $80460 - $117216 per year
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience skills knowledge abilities education licensure and certifications and other business and organizational needs. The Anticipated Hiring Range referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Classification Range may be broader than what the University anticipates paying for this position based on internal equity budget and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
