Assistant Public Works Director

Harris County, Georgia, population 36,000 and located in west central Georgia along the Alabama border 60 minutes southwest of Atlanta, 30 minutes north of Columbus, and home to Callaway Resort and Gardens and FDR State Park, is accepting applications for an Assistant Public Works Director for the County.

This full-time position operates under the direction of the County Manager and is responsible for supervising the day-to-day operations of the Public Works Department. The Assistant Director reports directly to the Director of Public Works and assists in overseeing departmental activities, personnel, and services to ensure efficient and effective operations.

Duties include responding to or assisting with citizen complaints and concerns, helping to ensure timely and effective resolution. Assists in the inspection and approval of new development plats for presentation to the Board of Commissioners and helps prepare cost estimates and bid specifications for road improvement projects. Also assists in preparing cost estimates for private roads being considered by the Board for acceptance into the county-maintained road system. Performs inspections of utility encroachments and driveway permits to ensure proper placement and pipe sizing within county rights-of-way and performs other related duties as assigned.

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent, with an Associate degree preferred, and more than two years of related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position. The successful candidate must have the ability to obtain Correctional Officer I certification within six months of employment and possess a valid driver's license.

The starting wage is DOQ, plus generous benefits including a five-year vesting schedule for retirement.
