Legal Assistant 2, SG-17 (NY HELPS) Location: Albany, NY Posting Dates: April 17, 2026 – April 27, 2026 Responsibilities Organize and maintain case files Draft and prepare legal documents—motions, affidavits, discovery responses, briefs, opinions, and correspondence Conduct document review and investigations Analyze court orders and adversary filings Assist with hearing and trial preparation Coordinate service and court filings Track legislation Support contract drafting and negotiations, advancing cases to the point of attorney review and approval Salary Position is in the PEF Salary Grade (SG)17 Starting salary: $63,361 per year Eligible for the New York State Performance Evaluation Program, which may result in performance advances that can bring the salary to $80,655 per year over time Benefits Health insurance options (inexpensive) Free dental and vision coverage NYS Pension Plan membership Paid parental leave Paid time off: 5 days personal, 13 vacation days, 13 sick days, 13 paid holidays per year Potential eligibility for the Federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF) Minimum Qualifications NY HELPS appointment can be made via promotion or open‑competitive appointment Direct‑line lower‑level promotion qualification : One year of permanent, contingent‑permanent, or 55 b/c service as a Legal Assistant1, SG‑14 Open‑competitive qualification : Three years of full‑time experience as a Paralegal/Legal Assistant Educational requirement: either • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in a paralegal/legal‑assistant program from a regionally accredited institution, or one accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) or the American Bar Association (ABA), plus one year of subsequent full‑time experience as a Paralegal/Legal Assistant; or • Associate’s degree (or higher) in a paralegal/legal‑assistant program or a certificate in such a program from an accredited institution, plus two years of subsequent full‑time experience as a Paralegal/Legal Assistant; Graduation from an accredited ABA‑approved law school with a degree required for New York State Bar admittance will satisfy the educational requirement. Non‑qualifying degrees include Criminal Justice, Legal Studies, Liberal Arts, Political Science, Business Administration, and Business Management. Non‑qualifying experience includes work limited to general clerical or secretarial duties performed in a law office. Transfer qualification under Section52.6 : Source titles must be designated administrative and within two salary grades or one M‑grade of the target title. Educational and experience requirements are identical to those listed above. Reassignment qualification : Must be a current Department of Agriculture and Markets employee with one year of permanent, contingent‑permanent, or 55 b/c service as a Legal Assistant2, SG‑17. Transfer qualification under Section70.1 : Applicants may be appointed to this position permanently if they have one year of permanent, competitive service in a title designated as a transfer under Section70.1 (e.g., Senior Attorney, SG‑25).
