Field Welding Engineer

Overview Aecon is a North American construction and infrastructure development company with global experience in nuclear services, including refurbishment, maintenance, new build, and decommissioning. The Project Field Welding Engineer will support the welding program at Aecon project sites and serve as a technical expert for welding‑related codes and issues. Responsibilities Ensure proper implementation and maintenance of the corporate or site welding and QA program. Support the Welding Program Manager with execution of project welding activities per company manual, regulatory, code and contract requirements. Review contract and design specifications to develop project welding requirements (Project Technical Welding Requirements Document) and support constructability evaluations during the design phase. Assist discipline planners/field engineers with welding documentation (Weld Records and Weld Maps). Issue, control and update welding procedures, specifications, process control documents and other technical welding documents. Support implementation of welding program management software at project site and coordinate with corporate offices. Travel to suppliers/vendors to support welding program activities, assist vendors with fabrication and technical issues, and help with welding personnel qualification, WPS qualification and documentation. Facilitate availability of welding documentation and technical support for Project Manager and Superintendents to execute field welding operations. Direct and implement project welder qualification program and welder status program, including supervising the weld test shop and qualification testing. Oversee weld material issue program and provide technical responses to regulatory bodies, clients and staff. Set day‑to‑day direction for welding engineers (when assigned) to support project goals. Implement and support the project welding documentation database and issue weekly welding status reports. May perform other mechanical and piping field engineering functions as required. Qualifications Minimum two‑year associate’s degree in Welding, Engineering, Materials Science, Welding Engineering Technology or related field and 5–15 years of welding engineering experience. A 4‑year technical degree with at least 2 years of experience in the nuclear power generation or federal nuclear industry is acceptable. Alternatively 10 years of welding experience in the nuclear industry; experience in commercial nuclear outages and major component replacement projects required. Experience with ASME Section IX and at least one of Sections I, II, VIII, B31.1 or AWS D1.1. Proficient in development, qualification and application of welding procedures for power plant construction. Experience resolving welding‑related project and code issues. Experience testing welders, supervising weld test shops, and performing destructive and non‑destructive testing of welder qualification coupons. Familiarity with weld filler material purchase, requisition, and procurement processes. Familiarity with preparing and approving welder performance qualification records. Ability to train project personnel on welding program procedures and requirements. Knowledge of post‑weld heat treatment and nondestructive examination procedures. Experience providing technical input to welding subcontracts for specialty services. Other Job Requirements Must secure unescorted access authorization to the plant site. Must perform physical duties such as walking, climbing stairs/ladders, wearing fall protection, climbing scaffolds, entering confined spaces, seeing and hearing within legal limits, and lifting up to 25 lbs. Must effectively use computer software required for the position, including welding management software; prior nuclear plant welding program and electronic welding‑management experience required. Requires a high level of AWS and ASME welding knowledge. Preferred Additional Qualifications Experience with machine GTAW welding processes and equipment. Experience with advanced machine welding systems and processes. Experience with field machining and precision measurements for piping and equipment installation. In‑depth experience with electronic welding management systems. Participation in an ASME or AWS committee, sub‑committee or working group. Ability to interface directly with clients regarding welding program quality, regulatory compliance and technical issues. Experience troubleshooting and resolving welding technical issues. Non‑destructive examination experience or daily interaction with NDE processes or subcontractors. Salary & Benefits Hourly wage: $65.00–$85.00 USD (or $91.00–$119.00 CAD, hourly).
