Nature of Work An employee in this class assists a physical therapist with delivering therapy to students with physical handicaps, helping to develop or improve students’ underlying skills that are prerequisites for academic learning. The employee is responsible for adapting furniture, toys, clothes and equipment for therapy use, caring for materials and equipment, washing equipment between students’ use, coordinating a feeding program, and monitoring the safety and well‑being of students. Duties and Responsibilities Performs scheduled therapy activities under the direction of a therapist; assists students in preparation for therapy sessions, including obtaining and positioning equipment, transporting students to class, and assisting with preliminary lifting and stretching exercises. Monitors safety and well‑being of students at all times; encourages self‑esteem and promotes increasing independence. Confers with parents, doctors, nurses, therapists, counselors, and others to understand student needs and facilitate appropriate services. Coordinates a feeding program with physical therapists, administrators, teachers, and parents; provides updated information to classroom teachers and cafeteria workers regarding food consistencies, allergies, prescriptions, and special diets. Feeds students as necessary, monitors special diets, accompanies students to lavatories, and administers medication. Prepares and cares for therapy materials and equipment; maintains supplies and adapts furniture, toys, and clothing; washes all equipment with antibacterial cleaner between uses. Performs general housekeeping duties, sets up equipment each morning, stores equipment at day’s end, and repairs or maintains school or student equipment. Performs clerical duties, maintains student progress records, reviews records with therapist, ensures availability of records for meetings with physicians and other specialists. Participates in staff development workshops. Completes random moment‑in‑time studies as required by MAC program guidelines. Performs other related duties as required. Minimum Training Completion of an accredited educational curriculum for physical therapist assistants and two years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be licensed as a physical therapist assistant in North Carolina. Essential Job Functions Ability to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools such as computers, copiers, typewriters, calculators, pencils, scissors, and adaptive equipment. Ability to exert negligible force and lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects as needed. Ability to read and prepare correspondence, reports, forms, instructions, and instructional materials in prescribed formats. Ability to apply rational systems to solve practical problems with limited standardization and interpret instructions in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form. Ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures, follow oral and written instructions, and communicate effectively and efficiently. Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Working knowledge of physical therapy theory, methods, and application. Skill in modifying and constructing adaptive equipment and devices. Skill in applying and using therapeutic equipment. Ability to communicate with students, parents, and teachers.
