A day in this apprenticeship
You arrive at your cell, review the work instructions from your CNC Trainer/Supervisor, and get the machine and gages ready. As production begins, you run parts, check dimensions with the right gages, fine‑tune offsets, and keep detailed paperwork up to date. Throughout the shift, you change inserts when needed, follow the tag procedure, and keep safety, housekeeping, and environmental practices front and center. You wrap up by sharing any improvement ideas with your supervisor or the HR Box.
What you’ll do- Follow all job, inspection, safety, and environmental instructions as outlined in Cell work instructions and by your CNC Trainer or Supervisor
- Accurately complete all required paperwork and documentation
- Prepare CNC equipment and gages for operation
- Operate machines and verify part conformity using appropriate gaging
- Consistently produce quality parts that meet company and customer standards
- Meet or exceed established production output goals
- Perform offset adjustments to maintain dimensional accuracy
- Follow the tag procedure as required
- Change tooling inserts and select proper insert types/radii
- Adhere to Housekeeping, Safety & Environmental requirements, including recycling, labeling, spills, and related programs
- Comply with all applicable Quality and Environmental system requirements
- Submit continuous improvement ideas in safety, productivity, quality, and housekeeping to your supervisor or the HR Box
- Perform other duties as assigned by your supervisor
- Experience with or trainable on CNC lathes, mills, and broaches
- Machine shop training in high school or beyond
- Ability to perform offset adjustments
- Knowledge of insert types and radii and how to change them correctly
- Proficient in reading and interpreting gages such as plug, snap, flush pin, go/no-go, and calipers
- CNC lathes
