PURPOSE OF POSITION

The Security Officer is responsible for maintaining security and safety of people and property by patrolling the 82-acre school campus and enforcing School rules and regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Diploma required.
  • One year minimum experience as a security guard; Knowledge of basic safety, security and fire alarm procedures.
  • Skill in both verbal and written communication; Skill in observing situations and decision appropriate decision making.
  • Skill in dealing courteously with the public.
  • A valid driver's license; CPR Certificate.
  • Must provide a recent physical from a licensed physician.
  • No prior arrests for serious crimes.
  • Demonstrated aptitude or competence for assigned responsibilities.

New employees in this position must provide documentation of immunity or immunization against tetanus, diphtheria, and measles/rubella, and of tuberculosis status by skin test or X-ray within thirty (30) days of hiring, and at such additional intervals as may be determined by the immediate supervisor.

Navajo /Indian Preference:

Consideration for employment will be given to Navajo, American Indian or Alaskan Tribal member with the required documentation including the necessary qualifications to meet the minimal requirements of the position. The Navajo/Indian preference law shall apply in all aspects of the position.

CLASSIFICATION

Non-Exempt hourly wage position on an as-needed basis.

COMPENSATION

This is a non-classified, non-exempt support position employed on an as-needed basis. Payment rate is according to the NPS Support Salary Scale.

Current school year

Note: Notwithstanding the above, this position is subject to possible furlough, or reduction in force under NPS, Inc. Personnel Policies; due to unforeseen reductions in program funding that requires such general program changes.

SUPERVISOR

Primary: Security Supervisor and/or Facility Manager

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  1. Effectively use radio and telephone for staff communication or call for assistance from police, fire, or emergency medical services as the situation dictates.
  2. Patrols assigned areas on foot, bicycle or vehicle checking for fires, vandalism, suspicious activity or persons or safety/fire hazards.
  3. Makes sure students do not leave premises without authorized permission and that students conduct themselves in accordance with school rules and policies; Assists the residential/academic program for any student violation within the guidelines of student and parental rights.
  4. Investigates and/or reports hazards, unusual or suspicious circumstances to administration or local law enforcement (when necessary) for correction or follow- up actions.
  5. Checks doors and windows of buildings to ensure they are tightly closed and locked; notes in written log any unlocked doors/windows; submits information to supervisor.
  6. Assists any persons in building or on grounds needing directions or campus information.
  7. Responds to alarms and emergency calls; decides what actions to take based on situation, facts known and position limitations; be knowledgeable of utility shut-off locations and act if necessary.
  8. Unlocks buildings/doors and checks interior buildings in accordance with school policies.
  9. May assist law enforcement officers with crowd control and surveillance at large public events.
  10. Provide 24 hour patrol on school premises to prevent and detect signs of intrusion and ensure security of doors, windows, and gates.
  11. Monitor and authorize entrance and departure of employees, visitors, and other persons to guard against theft and maintain security of premises.
  12. Write reports of daily activities and irregularities, such as equipment or property damage, theft, presence of unauthorized persons, or unusual occurrences.
  13. Call police or fire department in cases of emergency, such as fire or presence of unauthorized persons; meet the emergency vehicle and communicate effectively.
  14. Reports student violators of rule infractions and make concise detailed reports.
  15. Report and call police, if necessary, regarding loitering, smoking, drinking or carrying of forbidden articles or contraband.
  16. Watches for and reports any irregularities such as fire hazards, safety hazards, leaking water pipes, etc. Calls the Facility Manager, police or fire department in case of fire or presence of unauthorized persons.
  17. Relates and interacts with colleagues, supervisors, other school staff, students, parents and community members in a professional manner.
  18. Provides for own professional growth through ongoing program of reading, and as scheduled by the supervisor, accepts and actively participates in training related to the job.
  19. Supports and efficiently carries out responsibilities in accordance with Navajo Preparatory School Board, Inc. (NPS) Policies and Procedures.
  20. Secures and protects the confidentiality of NPS, Inc. student and staff personnel information.
  21. Performs other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.

Will be evaluated in accordance with the Navajo Preparatory School Board, Inc. policies and procedures.
