Ophthalmic Tech II (SEIU) - Eye Clinic Byers - Full Time

Overview We are seeking an Ophthalmic Technician II (SEIU) for the Byers Eye Institute, a multi‑specialty group practice within Stanford Health Care. The position involves obtaining medical histories, recording patient ocular history, performing a range of ophthalmic tests, assisting in minor procedures, and handling administrative duties. Location Stanford Health Care, United States of America. Responsibilities Supervise daily interactions with assistant technical/patient care managers and doctors, and attend periodic meetings with clinic manager. Work with minimal supervision; progress checks are performed regularly. Clinical Duties Accurately document patient ocular and medical history, both electronically and in paper records. Obtain visual acuity, autorefractometry, lensometry, tonometry, topography, visual fields, ocular motility, biometry, and optical coherence tomography. Perform ophthalmic electrophysiology testing (ERG, EOG, VEP, GVF, color vision tests). Write preliminary reports on all scans performed and meet proficiency requirements of the department. Administer eye drops for pupil dilation and topical anesthesia under provider supervision. Assist physicians during minor surgical procedures (intravitreal injections and laser treatments) by setting up instruments, responding to physician needs, and reprocessing instruments afterward. Process medication refill requests and consult with physicians regarding prescription reviews. Educate patients on medication usage. Maintain equipment and supplies for examination rooms, including expiry checks, cleaning, and sterilization. Prepare necessary supplies for diagnostic testing, exams, and procedures. Consult with physicians concerning test results and alert them to abnormalities. Provide patient care support for other services as needed. Report patient concerns, symptoms, reactions, and changes to licensed clinic personnel. Serve as a liaison between medical staff and patients, answering questions and coordinating care. Monitor and track work requests and perform tasks in compliance with safety policies. Provide excellent customer service and maintain confidentiality of all patient records. Administrative Duties Triage patient issues for timely resolution. Respond to requests from doctors and staff during clinic operations. Conduct follow‑up calls to patients regarding procedures or appointments. Assist with file preparation, input appropriate forms, and handle insurance verifications. Maintain clinic flow, balancing testing requirements with appointment times. Follow up on diagnostic testing results and coordinate with radiology, pathology, and lab teams. Coordinate service requests with vendors and IT support teams. Assist in designing educational programs for staff development. Assist in safety monitoring program efforts. Assist with pharmaceutical inventory and logs. Support and participate in department huddles and team meetings. Demonstrate CICARE service standards and perform other duties as assigned. Education and Qualifications High school diploma or GED equivalent. Associate degree – combined experience/education, as substitute for minimum education. Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) upon hire, maintained by renewal before expiration. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Minimum one year experience serving as an ophthalmic technician in a high‑volume setting. Knowledge of ophthalmic medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology of the visual system. Skill in acquiring accurate medical history and performing visual acuity, tonometry, and other ophthalmic tests. Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel; ability to type with speed and accuracy. Excellent written communication, editing, and proofreading. Strong interpersonal and customer service skills. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time, and resolve conflicts. Compassionate, caring, and detailed‑oriented personality. Ability to learn state‑of‑the‑art diagnostic equipment and maintain equipment operations. Team‑work and ability to adapt to dynamic clinical environments. Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Experience working in a university‑based medical facility or academic teaching environment. Knowledge of various ophthalmic clinical protocols. Familiarity with microperimetry and experimental equipment. Experience with BLS – Basic Life Support. Additional certifications such as Ophtha Asst – COA. Licenses and Certifications BLS – Basic Life Support. Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA). Compensation Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $40.51 – $45.44 per hour. Final salary determined by internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.
