Maintenance Technician (Plumber)

This role supports facility operations by monitoring building automation systems and performing plumbing-related preventive maintenance, repairs, and alterations across multiple buildings. You will take direction from facility operations and maintenance supervisors while ensuring plumbing and related systems operate safely, efficiently, and reliably.

Responsibilities

• Monitor Building Authority Automation Systems to ensure proper operation of plumbing and related mechanical systems.
• Perform preventive maintenance on plumbing systems, following established schedules and procedures to minimize downtime and extend equipment life.
• Diagnose and repair issues in plumbing systems, including leaks, blockages, malfunctioning fixtures, and equipment failures.
• Install, replace, and modify plumbing systems and components in accordance with applicable codes, standards, and safety practices.
• Service and maintain valves, ensuring proper operation, sealing, and flow control throughout the facility.
• Maintain and repair pumps used in water, sewer, and other fluid systems, including inspection, adjustments, and component replacement.
• Inspect, test, and maintain reduced pressure (R.P.) devices and backflow prevention equipment to protect water quality and system integrity.
• Install, repair, and maintain plumbing fixtures such as sinks, toilets, showers, and related hardware.
• Maintain and repair irrigation systems, including sprinkler heads, lines, and controls to ensure efficient lawn and landscape watering.
• Service and maintain drinking fountains, ensuring proper water flow, temperature, and sanitation.
• Inspect, repair, and assist with installation of fire sprinkler systems to support facility safety and compliance.
• Maintain and repair kitchen and laundry equipment with plumbing connections, including water supply and drainage components.
• Install, repair, and maintain air, gas, water, sewer, and drainage lines, including piping, fittings, and associated hardware.
• Perform general facility maintenance tasks such as basic lighting maintenance, drywall repairs, carpentry work, and painting as needed.
• Use power tools, hand tools, and safety equipment correctly and safely while performing maintenance and repair tasks.
• Document work performed, including preventive maintenance, repairs, and installations, in maintenance records or work order systems.
• Collaborate with supervisors, facility operators, and other maintenance staff to prioritize tasks and respond to maintenance requests.
• Follow all safety procedures and guidelines while working in and around court and correctional facilities, including proper use of personal protective equipment.
• Support continuous improvement of maintenance practices by identifying recurring issues and recommending solutions.

Essential Skills

• Previous experience and working knowledge in the preventive maintenance, repair, and installation of plumbing systems.
• Hands-on experience with valves, pumps, plumbing fixtures, and related piping systems.
• Previous experience and working knowledge in the repair and installation of fire sprinkler systems.
• Previous experience and working knowledge in the repair and installation of lawn irrigation systems.
• Ability to perform general facility maintenance tasks, including lighting maintenance, drywall repair, basic carpentry, and painting.
• Proficiency in using power tools and plumbing-related hand tools safely and effectively.
• Ability to interpret and follow maintenance procedures, safety guidelines, and basic technical documentation.
• Strong troubleshooting skills to diagnose and resolve plumbing and facility maintenance issues.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a maintenance team environment.
• Commitment to following safety protocols, especially in secure and sensitive facilities.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Familiarity with electrical testing equipment such as mega ohm meters, amp and volt meters, and circuit tracers.
• Ability to use pipe benders and related tools for installing and modifying piping systems.
• Experience operating trucks, ladders, and other equipment commonly used in facility maintenance.
• Comfort using a variety of electrical and mechanical hand tools along with appropriate safety equipment.
• Interest in pursuing trade licenses, certifications, or degree programs related to maintenance, plumbing, or technical trades.

Work Environment

This position works primarily indoors with routine exposure to outdoor conditions as part of facility maintenance activities. You will work in court buildings that connect to correctional facilities, requiring awareness of secure environments and adherence to facility protocols. The role balances independent tasks with collaborative work alongside other maintenance professionals. You will regularly use a variety of maintenance tools and equipment, including electrical testing devices, pipe benders, ladders, trucks, and standard electrical and plumbing hand tools, always in conjunction with appropriate safety equipment.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Indianapolis, IN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $38.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
