Grounds Maintenance Worker

Exemption Status/Test: Nonexempt Reports to: Director of Maintenance Dept./School: Maintenance

Terms of Employment: 245 days

Primary Purpose: To help maintain the physical school plant in a condition of operating excellence so that full educational use may be made at all times.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification

1. License requirements
2. Texas Motor Vehicle Operators License

Special Knowledge/ Skills

1. Good knowledge of the operation, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of ground maintenance equipment
2. Must demonstrate good mathematical calculation skills and reading comprehension skills
3. Good knowledge of safety precautions to avoid injury to himself and others

Experience

1. Prior lawn care experience or grounds maintenance experience in an educational institution or environment

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

To help maintain the physical school plant in a condition of operating excellence so that full educational use of it may be made at all times

1. Responsible for maintaining and maintaining all campus lawns, athletic fields, common areas, and associated structures.
2. Completes lawn and grounds maintenance tasks to include: mowing, edging, raking, watering, tree and hedge trimming, painting; and application of fertilizers, weed killer, and pesticides.
3. Completes marking of athletic fields for sports events and/or competitions.
4. Operates and maintains powered grounds care equipment to include; mowers, trimmers, edgers, blowers, pressure washers, irrigation equipment, full-size tractors, and associated equipment.
5. Responsible for the security, accountability, and upkeep of all lawn and grounds maintenance equipment.
6. Assist with the installation and operation of all equipment, platforms, and structures in auditoriums, gymnasiums, and athletic or other performance events.
7. Dispose of all lawn clippings and residue in approved containers.
8. Adheres to the published ground's maintenance schedule.
9. Examines district-owned grounds regularly for purposes of preventive maintenance and advises the Maintenance Director of observations.
10. Performs all other maintenance duties or tasks as assigned.

Equipment Used:

Hand tools; both electric and gas powered, garden to utility size tractors up to full size backhoe, pickup truck and vans.

Working Conditions:

Attendance Demands: Daily attendance is required. Absenteeism or tardiness is not acceptable.

Mental Demands:

Reading, ability to understand verbal instructions; Math; ability to understand and use ratios.

Physical Demands/ Environmental Factors:

Strenuous walking, standing, and/or climbing, heavy lifting, and carrying (exceeds 50 lbs). Work outside and inside; exposure to hot and cold temperatures; exposure to dust, toxic chemicals, and materials; slippery or uneven walking surfaces; work on ladders; work alone. Day, evening, and weekend work required.
