Join the power movement as a Metrology Engineer CFS is an innovative clean energy company designing SPARC, a tokamak-style fusion power demonstrator able to achieve net energy plasmas. This demonstrator will lead to ARC, a power-plant scale fusion power generator system. SPARC includes high-temperature superconducting and copper magnets, thermal shields, cryogenic cooling systems, vacuum vessels, and plasma facing components, all of which are densely packed into a power system and are subject to large operational loads (thermal, electromagnetic, etc.). Critical to the success and performance of the device is the precise alignment and assembly of key systems and structures within the dense device assembly. As a Metrology Engineer on the SPARC Assembly team, your responsibility will be to utilize portable 3D metrology technology to perform mid- to large-scale precision alignments and dimensional inspections on a wide variety of unique SPARC systems and structures according to the SPARC metrology plan. Responsibilities Use laser trackers and other portable 3D metrology equipment to perform precision alignments and dimensional inspections in a manufacturing/job site environment on a variety of components varying in scale from handheld to full power plant Perform metrology tasks both independently and as part of a team according to the baseline metrology plan and the guidance of senior metrology staff Optimize measurement efficiency by utilizing logical portable 3D metrology sequences and industry best practices Maintain well-organized files and datasets that follow logical structure for ease of review as needed throughout the SPARC project Evaluate measurement uncertainty and how it relates to the accuracy of results Analyze and review metrology data for accuracy and effectively communicate results to stakeholders In adverse cases, work with stakeholders to create and execute a workflow that allows efficient and expedient completion of mis-alignment issues Exercise proper care and maintenance of metrology equipment to ensure operability and accuracy Occasionally collaborate with design/engineering teams to understand requirements and work with the metrology team to develop unique solutions that balance precision and accuracy with a demanding project schedule Occasionally assist with analysis of production metrology data of major SPARC components that overlaps with the overall precision alignment plan Assist with non-metrology assembly activities as needed when metrology activities are light Qualifications – High School level High School Diploma or equivalent 5+ years experience using laser trackers for mid- to large-scale 3D metrology in a manufacturing/jobsite setting (i.e. other than QC lab) 5+ years experience using portable metrology software for 3D data collection and advanced metrology analyses (e.g. SpatialAnalyzer, Polyworks, Verisurf, etc.) Experience using non-contact laser line scanners for inspecting complex shapes and free-form features Experience with precision alignment of large, delicate, and complex structures in dense spaces Experience with large metrology control networks, multiple instrument setups, and alignments of components across multiple rooms without line-of-sight to reference objects Experience working both independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team with different levels of engineering, manufacturing, or operations professionals Experience using CAD to extract information for alignments/inspections Experience with traditional metrology hand tools and table-top methods for small scale components Intermediate understanding of GD&T per ASME Y14.5 Advanced level of 3D spatial awareness and reasoning, and the ability to describe such in a clear and concise manner Basic understanding of how portable 3D metrology tools function and how that affects measurement uncertainty Self-critique of measurement process and collected data, and the ability strategize and develop alternative verification methods Fundamental understanding of environmental conditions and their effect on measurements Basic mechanical aptitude, including ability to interpret dimensions, tolerances, and assembly notes Ability to communicate and work with all levels of engineering, physics, manufacturing, and operations personnel Ability to clearly express and critique ideas Excellent organization and careful management of data Attention to detail Emphasis on elegance and simplicity over complexity Driven towards execution and rapid completion Drive towards commercially viable solutions Values that align with our company’s values of integrity, execution, impact, and self-critique Qualifications – Advanced level (Bachelor’s degree and more experience) Bachelor’s degree in an engineering field 7+ years experience using laser trackers for mid- to large-scale 3D metrology in a manufacturing/jobsite setting (i.e. other than QC lab) 7+ years experience using SpatialAnalyzer for 3D data collection and advanced metrology analyses Experience operating multiple instruments in tandem to perform a single alignment Experience with measurement arms, photogrammetry, optical CMMs, or other forms of portable 3D metrology equipment 3+ years experience using CAD (e.g. NX, Solidworks, CATIA, etc.) to design custom metrology tooling Advanced understanding and application of GD&T per ASME Y14.5 Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs Perform activities such as sitting, climbing, stooping, typing, and standing for extended periods of time Working from heights is required. Must be able to safely utilize fall protection for work at heights of up to 35 feet via MEWPs (i.e. boom lift, scissor lift), temporary platforms (i.e. scaffolding, custom platforms), and ladders when necessary.
