Faculty Position in Physician Assistant Studies

The College of Health Professions at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) seeks applicants for a full-time faculty position in the Department of Physician Assistant Studies located at the UAMS campus in Little Rock, Arkansas. The faculty position is a 12-month position at the rank of assistant or associate professor. Salary and academic rank are commensurate with qualifications.

Position Description: A faculty member (Assistant/Associate Professor) will have the primary responsibility of assisting with the implementation, evaluation, and revision of the didactic and clinical curriculum. This individual will be responsible for presenting lectures and laboratory instruction, developing and grading examinations and assignments, and recruiting guest lecturers. They will also be actively involved with student advising and admissions, faculty meetings, committees, and scholarly activity. This will be tenure-track or non-tenure-track position.

Reporting: The faculty member reports to the PA Chair/Program Director. Annual performance evaluations will be conducted by the PA Program Director with input from faculty and staff.

The UAMS Master of Physician Assistant Studies Program is a continuous, 28-month, full-time professional degree program. A new cohort begins each year in mid-May and completes the program at the end of August, approximately two years later.

The program prepares physician assistants with a broad foundation of medical knowledge and clinical skills to provide high-quality, compassionate care to diverse patient populations under the supervision of a licensed physician. The cohort-based program follows a structured, lock-step curriculum. Students must successfully complete all courses each semester and remain in good academic standing to progress.

Didactic Phase: The first 13 months include intensive classroom instruction, laboratory experiences, seminars, patient simulation, service-learning activities, and clinical patient encounters.

Clinical Phase: The final 15 months include 10 core clinical rotations, two elective rotations, a capstone project, and a summative evaluation. Core rotations include family medicine, internal medicine, inpatient medicine, women's health, emergency medicine, surgical medicine, pediatric medicine, behavioral medicine, orthopedic medicine, and geriatric medicine. Clinical experiences take place at UAMS and partner facilities throughout Arkansas.

The program admits a small cohort of 40 students and maintains an approximately 4-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio during the didactic phase. Each student is paired with a faculty advisor throughout the program and benefits from early patient-care experiences and service learning.

Unique program resources and experiences include the 12th Street Health and Wellness Center, Student Success Center, Student Wellness Center, interprofessional education, and mindfulness training.

Qualifications:

• Graduation from an accredited physician assistant or medical program.
• Master's degree.
• Current National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) certification.
• At least three years of clinical experience as a practicing physician assistant or physician.
• Eligibility for professional licensure in the state of Arkansas.
• Strong commitment to supporting the missions of the department, college, and university.

Preferred Qualifications

• Doctoral degree.
• Teaching experience in physician assistant education or a related field.
• Five or more years of clinical experience.

Responsibilities:

• Participate in the design, implementation, coordination, evaluation, and revision of the didactic and clinical curricula.
• Support the ARC-PA continuing accreditation application and maintenance processes.
• Assist with developing, reviewing, and revising the program's mission statement, goals, and competencies.
• Participate in ongoing program self-assessment and evaluation activities, including the Annual Program Assessment Retreat.
• Serve as course director for assigned didactic courses.
• Recruit and orient qualified lecturers for didactic courses.
• Instruct physician assistant students in areas of knowledge and expertise.
• Provide academic advising to physician assistant students.
• Ensure remedial instruction is available to students as needed.
• Participate in student recruitment, admissions, and interviews.
• Provide laboratory instruction during the didactic and clinical phases of the program.
• Evaluate student performance by grading written assignments, examinations, Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs), practical skill competencies, and oral presentations.
• Participate in faculty meetings and retreats, as well as departmental, college, and university committees.
• Maintain current National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) certification.
• Participate in appropriate local, state, and national physician assistant educational and professional associations.
• Participate in clinical practice or research activities based on the tenure-track or non-tenure-track appointment, as determined by the Department Chair/Program Director.
• Maintain high standards of professionalism and integrity while serving as a positive role model for physician assistant students.
• Refrain from serving as a medical provider for students enrolled in the Physician Assistant program.
• Participate actively in community service and service-learning activities associated with the Physician Assistant program.
• Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Department Chair/Program Director.
