Description: Unit is an Emergency Room. It is not designated as a trauma level, STEMI, or stroke center. The unit has 11 beds and no separate fast track. There is one triage room, utilized only when patient rooms are full. ER RNs manage holds, which are intermixed within the ER. There are 2 safe behavioral health rooms, but they are not separate from other ER rooms. Security is housed in the ER but is not present 24/7. On average, the ER treats 40 patients per day. Nurse to patient ratios are 1:3 or 1:4. Required certifications include ACLS, BLS, PALS, and SANE (as of January 2023). Common diagnoses include cardiac, respiratory, and gastrointestinal conditions. There is 24/7 physician coverage and 12-hour NP coverage. The charge nurse takes a patient load, while the house supervisor is available after 3 PM daily. There are ER techs with 24/7 coverage, and PRN sitters may be required. Respiratory therapists perform ABGs, intubation, EKGs, and breathing treatments. Portable x-ray is available; transportation is handled by radiology unless it is a STAT case. Nurses draw labs when they attempt IV sticks; phlebotomy will follow. Shift scheduling consists of every other weekend and holiday. Occasional floating to tasks may be required. Staff wears grey tops and black pants. The unit's orientation varies based on experience. The charting system utilized is Cerner.
